Ed and Deb Shapiro: The Best Karma Yogi in the World Is Santa

Karma yoga is perfection in action where our activity is of benefit to others, such as doing good, giving without wanting anything in return, and benevolent service. So who could be a better karma yogi than Santa Claus? Although his appearance may fool you, mainly because he has a habit of eating a lot of cookies, he does get good exercise going up and down all those chimneys. He also has a huge heart, loves to hug children, and is always smiling, which are signs of a good yogi.

For Santa is more than just a jolly old guy in a red outfit. A true yogi is someone who displays wisdom and compassion, and Santa is an excellent example. He sees everyone as his family, is always helping others, and he cares about you whether you're naughty or nice. Such fine qualities are ones we may all want to emulate.

1. He makes us do good and feel good. Now that's a big one, as many of us oftentimes act selfishly and badly.

2. He gives, endlessly, to everyone, all over the world, all at pretty much the same time. This indicates a truly generous heart, one that takes great joy in giving without needing to receive.

3. Yet he does not give blindly. Rather, he judges what is the most appropriate gift for each. This shows great discernment, as giving needs wisdom in order to be of most benefit.

4. He encourages rituals and invokes magic in every child's life: letter writing, stocking filling, decorations, parades, milk and cookies. Ritual is an essential part of honoring anything that is greater than us, and magic is the beauty of the unknown.

5. He listens to our pleas and requests and reads our letters, meaning he takes the time to hear us and pays attention, which we could all do a lot more of.

6. He has great psychic powers: He flies in the sky with reindeer, descends chimneys without getting covered in soot, goes by many names and forms, and is extraordinarily elusive. Has anyone actually ever seen him?

7. He knows where we live. In other words, he is inside every one of us.

8. Most importantly, he lifts our spirits at the darkest time, bringing us laughter and joy, which is undoubtedly the greatest gift of all.

Through giving to others, a la Santa, we turn selfishness into generosity and connect to basic goodness within us, a quality of kindness that is easy to lose touch with. Giving -- whether a smile, our time, a listening ear -- is profoundly joyful, both to the one who is receiving and the one who is giving.

If you haven't any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble. -- Bob Hope

Newtown backlash prompts gun investment overhaul

(Reuters) - Gun makers are facing pressure from some major U.S. investors after the Newtown elementary school shooting, with private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP announcing it would sell the largest U.S. manufacturer of firearms and major public pension funds reviewing their gun-related investments.

Cerberus said on Tuesday it would sell Freedom Group, whose AR-15-type Bushmaster rifle was used by a 20-year-old gunman to kill 20 children and six staff in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Cerberus' move came after some of its investors had expressed concerns, including the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS), which said on Monday that it was reviewing its investment with the private equity firm.

"It is apparent that the Sandy Hook tragedy was a watershed event that has raised the national debate on gun control to an unprecedented level," said Cerberus, which has more than $20 billion under management.

The $150.1 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund is reviewing its investments in firearm manufacturers, a spokesman for New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said on Tuesday.

New York City's pension funds are also reviewing investments and may sell nearly $18 million worth of stock in four companies that manufacture guns and ammunition, a spokesman said on Tuesday. The city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has been a leading advocate for gun control in the U.S.

The city's $128 billion pension funds hold nearly $14 million worth of shares in ammunition maker Olin Corp, $1.7 million in gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp, $2.4 million in gun maker Sturm Ruger & Co Inc and $17,866 worth of stock in Brazilian gun maker Forjas Taurus SA.

Shares of Smith & Wesson fell nearly 10 percent, shares of Sturm Roger fell 7.7 percent, shares of Forjas Taurus fell 3.8 percent and shares of Olin fell 2.1 percent on Tuesday.

It wasn't just public pension funds who were questioning whether they should have investments in gun companies.

King Lip, chief investment officer for San Francisco-based wealth adviser Baker Avenue Asset Management, said has received calls from clients wanting to make sure that the firm did not own or buy shares in gun-makers or gun-related companies.

"This one has especially hit close to home for a lot of people. A lot of our clients have kids or grandkids," said Lip, whose firm has about $800 million in client assets under management. The firm does not own any gun-related stocks.

As outrage grew over the killings in Newtown, some gun retailers pulled rifles off their shelves. Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, took down an informational website about semi-automatic Bushmaster rifles.

Dick's Sporting Goods pulled all guns from its store closest to the site of the massacre, and suspended the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide. Cabela's however, continued to advertise the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifles on its website.

California Treasurer Bill Lockyer on Monday asked CalSTRS and the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to account for their investments in gun manufacturers. Lockyer proposed that the state's public pension funds, the largest in the United States, sell their interest in any company that makes guns that are illegal under California's assault weapons ban. California's ban includes the Bushmaster rifle.

"We are not precluding the possibility of extending a divestment move to the retail sector, but right now we are focused on the source, which is the manufacturers," Lockyer's spokesman Tom Dresslar said.

KNEE-JERK REACTION?

U.S. lawmakers have not approved a major new federal gun law since 1994, and a ban on certain semi-automatic rifles known as assault weapons expired in 2004.

The Newtown killings have led President Barack Obama and some congressional leaders to reconsider what has been a largely hands-off approach to gun control in recent years.

The percentage of Americans favoring tough gun regulations rose significantly after the killings at the Connecticut school, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Monday.

While the latest moves by investors could herald a new chapter in corporate America's stance toward the issue of gun rights, it remains to be seen if they will have lasting effects.

Several investors held firm about investing in gun-related stocks, seeing the debate more as a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy. Vanguard Group Inc, the largest shareholder in Smith & Wesson, for example, said it was not in a position to meet what it called the "social concerns" of all shareholders.

Vanguard said in a statement it was "deeply saddened by the tragedy" but that most of its shares in Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger were held in index funds.

"All these stocks are getting hit, but ironically I think what we'll find is that traditional gun purchases will actually rise," said Timothy Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in New York.

"People are scared, and there's a good slice of America that very much believes they have a right to protect themselves," said Ghriskey, whose firm has a small position in gun retailer Cabela's. Cabela's shares fell 5.9 percent.

A German fund manager, who focuses on "sin" stocks such as firearms, alcohol and gambling, said he was sticking with his recommendation to buy Smith & Wesson stock despite Newtown.

It's a terrible tragedy, he said, "but everyone who changes his investment strategy now should ask himself if he really is surprised. Didn't they read newspapers in the past?"

CERBERUS DELIBERATION

Still, investor outrage over the shooting was enough for Cerberus to decide to sell Freedom Group.

The firm's decision came late on Monday night, after executives deliberated on the impact of the shooting, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

The private equity firm, which was founded by Stephen Feinberg and William Richter in 1992, also has to be careful not to anger investors at a time it is seeking to raise up to $3.5 billion for a new buyout fund.

Feinberg's father, Martin Feinberg, is also a resident of Newtown, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing an interview with him. Public records show a Martin Feinberg residing in a retirement facility in Newtown.

Cerberus bought firearms maker Bushmaster in 2006 and later merged it with other gun companies to create Freedom Group, which reported net sales of $677 million for the nine months ended September, up from $565 million a year earlier.

Cerberus filed for an initial public offering of Freedom Group in October 2009 but withdrew the registration in April 2011, without offering a reason.

"It's an unusual move by Cerberus but it was a terrible event, so they are responding to some of their investors who are teachers' funds. I'm sure they will be selling it at a low price because now would not be a good time to sell the business," said Steven Kaplan, a University of Chicago finance professor.

NYC Mayor Bloomberg launches campaign against gun violence

Seth Wenig / AP

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, at podium, watches a video testimonial surrounded by shooting survivors and victims' relatives during a news conference in City Hall in New York on Dec. 17, 2012.

By Carlo Dellaverson, NBC News

Flanked by dozens of survivors of shootings and family members of victims, a visibly angry New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on Congress and the president Monday to take specific and immediate action to reduce gun violence.

Bloomberg unveiled a campaign, sponsored by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns bipartisan coalition, called Demand a Plan that includes a website featuring video testimonials from 34 people affected by gun violence asking political leaders to tighten gun laws. Bloomberg called Washington?s inaction on the issue a ?stain on our nation?s commitment to protect our children.?

In attempting to increase pressure on lawmakers, Bloomberg said Friday?s massacre in Newtown, Conn. ?demands immediate national action.? But when asked by NBC News whether he intends to use his personal wealth to support specific legislation or candidates, Bloomberg declined to answer. Bloomberg?s personal Super PAC ? Independence USA ? ?which he created during the last election cycle, claimed 19 electoral victories and seven losses on election night, including the defeat of several NRA-backed candidates such as Rep. Joe Baca, who lost California?s 35th District to Gloria Negrete McLeod. Before Bloomberg?s $2.7 million cash infusion, McLeod had been trailing the NRA-supported Baca by double digits.

Bloomberg called on Congress to immediately enact a three-pronged legislative agenda that includes passing pending legislation known as the Fix Gun Checks Act, which would require a criminal background check for all gun sales. Current federal law requires licensed gun dealers to perform background checks but in private sales, where an estimated 40 percent of guns are bought and sold, background checks are not required. In addition, he asked Congress to ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines and to make gun trafficking a felony.

Bloomberg also called on President Barack Obama to use executive authority to confirm a new director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal law enforcement agency that investigates the unlawful possession of firearms. The ATF has gone without a confirmed director since 2006, when Congress changed the law to require that directors receive Senate confirmation. Bloomberg called the lack of a director a ?public safety threat.??ATF supporters say NRA opposition has left the agency running with only an acting director.

On Monday several members of Congress said they are open to restrictions on assault weapons, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg insisted it's time to take action. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

Among the family members of victims who stood behind Bloomberg as he made his call to action was Rita Kestenbaum, whose daughter Carol was shot to death in 2007 while attending Arizona State University. Carol and her roommate, Nicole Schiffman, were murdered by Schiffman?s ex-boyfriend, who also killed himself. Kestenbaum said she had been supporting Bloomberg?s gun control efforts ever since her daughter?s death and found it ?tremendously frustrating? each time she heard of a new shooting. ?I was here supporting this cause after Virginia Tech,? Kestenbaum said. ?Why am I still here meeting more people losing their kids to mass murder??

Nardyne Jeffries lost her only child, 16-year-old Brishell Jones, while she was eating pizza with a group of friends after attending the funeral for a victim of gun violence. A group of men driving by opened fire with an AK-47, killing Brishell and two others and injuring nine more. Jeffries said Friday?s violence brought back feelings she knew all too well. ?I?m sick of the kumbaya with the vigils and the politicians swooping in after every one of these,? she said. ?When is enough enough? You just shouldn?t have to bury your baby.?

That sense of anger was palpable with Chief John Aresta of the Malverne, N.Y., Police Department. He lost two people close to him to separate acts of gun violence, including his former partner. Aresta said that in supporting Bloomberg?s Demand a Plan campaign, he hoped he would inspire others to ?get up off the couch? and call on their elected leaders to demand change. ?We have to start somewhere,? he said. Asked whether he thought the gun lobby was too powerful for ordinary citizens like himself to take on, he scoffed. ?There are far more non-NRA members than there are NRA members in this country.?

Bloomberg plans to send copies of all 34 video testimonials on the Demand a Plan website to every member of Congress when it reconvenes in January.?

The Year in Dining | Food & Drink Features | Gambit New Orleans ...

Guys are always telling me now how hard it is to find chefs to hire," says chef/restaurateur Adolfo Garcia. "I say, 'Yeah, that's because they're all opening their own restaurants.'"

??He should know. Before Hurricane Katrina, Garcia was chef and partner at RioMar restaurant in the Warehouse District. Since 2005, he's opened five restaurants in New Orleans, often partnering with up-and-coming chefs to start them.

??Garcia may be more prolific than most, but he's hardly alone: Established restaurateurs are adding more properties, and young chefs are jumping into the business for themselves. Developers are designating spaces for new restaurants in their projects, and some restaurants are clustering in former dining deserts like Freret Street, where a dozen eateries have opened along a half-mile stretch since 2009, and Bywater, where six new restaurants have opened within a few blocks of each other this year. Then there are entrepreneurs who deliver their meals via food trucks and the pop-up restaurant scene; sometimes these ventures grow into brick-and-mortar restaurants.

??It adds up to a great surge in dining options this year in New Orleans.

??"When I talk with customers now and ask where else they've been eating, it's always a new place," says Chris Montero, executive chef at Cafe B in Old Metairie, which opened in 2011. "For us in the business it means more competition for every diner, but it's an eater's market out there."

Census figures from 2011 show the city's population at just three-quarters of its pre-Katrina level, while the population for the metro region remains 10 percent lower.

??Why are so many restaurants opening here now, when the industry has been suffering nationally? How does an area with a significantly reduced post-Katrina population support them?

??"You're just not seeing restaurants opening like this in other places," says Stan Harris, president of the Louisiana Restaurant Association (LRA). "To have this growth, even when the city's population is still down, it's just flabbergasting." (See "Opening soon," page 31.)

??While anecdotal evidence of the boom abounds, a precise figure on how many restaurants are open now is harder to come by because of the different criteria used to count restaurants and define markets. The state's parish-by-parish database of food-service permits generally is disregarded because it includes not only restaurants but everything from grocery stores to nursing homes. New Orleans tourism officials and other industry watchers instead have adopted the tally of restaurants food writer/radio host Tom Fitzmorris maintains on The New Orleans Menu website. It shows an increase from roughly 800 restaurants before Hurricane Katrina to more than 1,300 today, and Fitzmorris adds to that number nearly every week.

??This count is highly customized, however. It includes restaurants in all of Orleans Parish and most of Jefferson Parish, but only in certain towns in five other surrounding parishes. It also excludes fast food outlets, take-out and delivery-only operations and most national chains. Fitzmorris acknowledges his list is selective but says, "I have always used these same criteria, so it's a steady statistic."

??"It's not spot-on but we think his numbers are pretty dependable when you're talking about sit-down restaurants," says John Williams, director of the Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration at the University of New Orleans (UNO). "It gives you a gauge for what's happening."

??Those tracking restaurants nationally tend to analyze a larger regional picture. For instance, in its annual growth index released earlier this year, the market research company Nielsen Claritas reported 3,374 restaurants in the five-parish New Orleans area, including independent businesses and chains. That was an increase of 147 restaurants from the previous year and up by 523 restaurants from the total in its 2007 index. (Nielsen Claritas didn't respond to a request for pre-Katrina data.)

??That kind of growth is at odds with industry trends nationally. According to the New York-based market research firm NPD Group, while the overall restaurant industry is seeing a slight increase in visits and spending this year, the full-service sector, as opposed to fast food, continues to see declines.

??"The restaurant industry was hit hard by the recession and hasn't yet fully recovered," says Kim McLynn, a spokeswoman for NPD Group.

??The November edition of the National Restaurant Association's Restaurant Performance Index, which tracks the industry's health and outlook, fell to its lowest level in more than a year, with twice as many restaurant operators expecting business to worsen than improve.

Around the New Orleans restaurant scene today, though, you're more likely to hear optimism.

??"A lot of people have been waiting for the stumble on this, and it hasn't come." Williams says. "The restaurants here are doing very well."

??Some new restaurateurs are finding their dining rooms packed and their waiting lists or reservation books full. "We're always asking ourselves what we did in a past life to deserve this success," says Kim Nguyen, whose Vietnamese cafe Magasin has been a hit since it opened Uptown in February.

??Chef Michael Doyle is similarly surprised by the public's response to Maurepas Foods, the casual, intensely seasonal restaurant Doyle opened in January near his Bywater home. Many nights every table is full and much of the open space in this one-time corner store is filled with people waiting for tables.

??Doyle's plan to open Maurepas Foods in a neighborhood that had not been known for restaurants initially drew skeptics.

??"We had a banker come down here and turn around without even getting out of his car," Doyle says. "He pulled up, drove off and then emailed me later saying, 'There's just no way.'"

Just as new parts of town are growing into restaurant destin-ations, the types of new restaurants are different ? from New York-style slices at Pizza Delicious, a former pop-up that went fulltime last month; to Root, a yearling in the Warehouse District where chef Phillip Lopez prepares highly conceptual cuisine in a kitchen loaded with high-tech gear like dehydrators and sous vide cookers. Lopez, a New Orleans native, says he opened Root in response to the stagnation he felt at traditional restaurants here. He believes a craving for new culinary ideas is propelling new restaurant growth.

Winona Ryder gets creepy in new Killers video

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

The Killers keep making headlines with their video releases, but while their last one had a Christmas theme, the latest, "Here With Me," might be better suited for Halloween.

Directed by Tim Burton, it was filmed in the British resort town of Blackpool, according to Rolling Stone and -- oh, yeah, features Winona Ryder as the odd love interest of a young man.?

"The first time I saw The Killers perform live was in Blackpool, UK shortly after completing work on our first collaboration, the music video for 'Bones,'" wrote Burton in a post on the band's website. "When I heard the song 'Here With Me' I remembered seeing a wax figure of Winona in Louis Tussaud's Waxworks in Blackpool. The concept of the video is inspired by the 1935 film 'Mad Love,' starring Peter Lorre, as well as the works of Mario Bava."

Still, high-minded or not, Ryder (who appeared in Burton's 1990 film "Edward Scissorhands" and 1988's "Beetlejuice") does a dead-on, dead-eyed mannequin imitation. (Among a few other roles -- including a diner filled with Winonas.)

Clementus Cletus Williams, the son of parents both serving prison terms, was out on bail on a robbery arrest of a grocery store in Aurora. He was 15.

Witherspoon had been known for counseling kids like Williams at his church. But on Sept. 13, 2000, he and Williams allegedly clashed in a brief road rage incident on 29th Avenue and Adams Street.

Witherspoon was shot to death in an apparant road rage incident.

Authorities believed so strongly that Williams was responsible that they arrested him and then-district attorney Bill Ritter charged him as an adult with first degree murder.

But Williams was not found guilty of murder, nor was he acquitted. He didn?t even have a trial at all.

US nuclear test condemned by Iran, Japan

Iran has strongly condemned the US for carrying out a nuclear test in Nevada this week, saying the move threatens world peace and shows a hypocritical set of double standards set by Washington when it comes to nuclear research.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Wednesday detonation proves that US foreign policy relies heavily on the use of nuclear weapons, disregarding UN calls for global disarmament, PressTV reports.

The experiment also drew criticism from Japan, with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui wondering why the Obama administration carried out the test, despite saying he would ?seek a nuclear-free world.?

The test proves that the US ?could use nuclear weapons anytime,? said Hirotami Yamada, who heads the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council.

On Friday it was announced that the Nevada National Security Site had successfully detonated plutonium in a deep shaft Wednesday to test the safety and effectiveness of US nuclear weapons, National Nuclear Security Administration officials said.

The Pollux subcritical experiment was carried out by scientists at the Los Alamos, New Mexico national laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratories and involved a tiny sample of plutonium bomb material.

Subcritical nuclear experiments have been conducted in the US since 1997 in order to help scientists understand how plutonium ages in the stockpile.

They use chemical explosives to blow up bits of nuclear materials designed to stop just short of erupting into a nuclear chain reaction, also known as a criticality.

The latest test used new diagnostic equipment that enabled researchers to collect more data then ever before.

?This is a significant diagnostics advancement,? Darwin Morgan, spokesman for the Nevada National Nuclear Security Site, was quoted as saying by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Officials claimed that the test was carried out to provide for the secure storage of nuclear warheads.

International inspectors were not allowed to witness the experiment, as Washington has prevented access to its test site since the late 1990s.

Wednesday's test is twenty-seventh American "subcritical experiment" since full-scale nuclear weapons tests were halted in 1992.

Sparkly snowflakes and family-friendly winter ... - Pregnancy.org

by Missy Jaramillo

Winter decoratingSparkly lights, the sweet scent of evergreens and holiday decorations dot most homes from Thanksgiving to New Year's. Those shiny and pretty objects can tempt a child and drive parents bonkers.

Did you spend last year rescuing ornaments and shouting "don't touch"? Maybe you're ready for a different style of holiday d?cor this year -- trimmings your child won't harm?

Take a peek at these simple holiday decorations kids can not only touch and play with, but can help you create!

Kid-friendly holiday decorations

Greeting card towers

Let your child arrange all the greeting cards on a tabletop or mantel. When you get tired of picking them all up yet one more time, have your helper hand you cards while you clip them to a garland or tape them on the door frames.

A bucket of fun

Fill small, colorful buckets with empty boxes, stuffed ornaments or holiday toys. They'll get a lot of attention and clean up just means filling the bucket.

A basket of books

Choose a dozen holiday books and arrange in a container for kids to read anytime. Use a wire basket, cover a box with wrapping paper, or find a special container to house your new tradition.

Christmas dolls and toys

Set a few dolls and toys around. They make wonderful kid-friendly decorations. Each season, when you unpack the decorations, they'll seem like a new toy. Make it a tradition to make or find a new addition to your holiday family.

Homemade decorations

Felt Christmas tree

If you have a toddler or preschooler, you want to make a felt tree and plenty of "ornaments." They can decorate and undecorate their tree all they want and might leave the family tree alone.

Cut a tree from green felt. Attach it to the wall with several adhesive strips. Make ornaments from felt scraps in a variety of colors. We have mostly circles, but a few other shapes and one golden star. Attach decoration to your ornaments using heat n bond or a hot glue gun.

Of course, for this plan to work effectively, you'll have to play with the felt tree, too. A small child knows that what mom doesn't value isn't worth the kid's time.

A blizzard full of sparkly snowflakes

Cut paper snowflakes and make a wreath of them on the wall, holding each in place with poster putty or get out the thread and tape, and watch your family's own gentle snowstorm materialize in your living room.

To make sparkly snowflakes, tape waxed paper to your work surface. With white glue, outline a snowflake shape, connecting all the lines. Sprinkle liberally with glitter and allow it to dry. Shake the excess glitter back into its container and peel your snowflake off the paper. Stick it to the window and make another.

Garlands

In kindergarten, we glued together strips of paper to make paper chain garlands. Garlands can grace a doorway, swoop across a window or flow from branch to branch on your tree. This project hasn't changed with time. You can use construction or shiny decorated paper or print out designs.

Draw lines about an inch apart across a piece of paper. Show your child how to cut one the lines. Once you have a pile of several different colors, choose a strip and put a dab of glue on one end. Form a loop, overlapping the ends about 1/2 inch. Hold in place a few seconds. Make the next link the same except place it through your first circle before gluing the ends. Keep cutting and gluing until your chain is as long as you want.

Some families write scriptures, "thankfuls" or favorites on each link. Others list activities and use the garland as a holiday countdown.

Have you finished decorating your home for the holidays yet? Do you find you take a more family-friendly approach now? What's your favorite?

FTSE CLOSE: Footsie closes on three-month high following US jobs boost

By This Is Money Reporters

|

17.35 (CLOSE): London's FTSE 100 Index closed at a near-three month high today as figures showed the US unemployment rate falling to its lowest level for four years.

The top flight closed 13 points higher at 5914.4 after the US jobs report offset earlier concerns over the UK economy following dire manufacturing figures.

Figures revealed a far better-than-expected 146,000 jobs were added in the US last month, while the rate of unemployment dropped to 7.7 per cent - its lowest level since December 2008.

Jobs boost: Unemployment in the US has fallen to its lowest level for four years, providing a welcome boost to the London market.

Jobs boost: Unemployment in the US has fallen to its lowest level for four years, providing a welcome boost to the London market.

The top flight has also risen in recent sessions on hopes of an end-of-year deal to avert a series of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts in the US.

Trading had initially got off to a shaky start after the Office for National Statistics said UK manufacturing output fell 1.3 per cent in October, far worse than the 0.2 per cent decline that analysts had been expecting.

It fuelled fears the UK economy will contract in the fourth quarter after a rebound of 1 per cent in the previous three months helped end the longest double-dip recession since the 1950s.

In currency news, the pound weakened to 1.60 US dollars as the greenback strengthened following the US jobs report.

Sterling rose to 1.24 euros after the single currency was hit, with the German central bank slashing the country's growth forecast and speculation mounting over a European Central Bank rate cut.

In the FTSE 100 Index, sweeteners and starch manufacturer Tate & Lyle lost early session gains seen after it reduced the risk on its pension scheme by hedging 43 per cent of liabilities through the purchase of a bulk annuity policy and related transfer of assets to Legal & General. Shares later eased back by 2p to 759p.

Marks & Spencer featured on the fallers board with a decline of 4.2p to 393.6p after Goldman Sachs downgraded the retailer to sell from neutral.

The broker highlighted margin pressure on M&S and said the chain was likely to see declining returns on capital investment in the medium term. Tesco was also struggling in the top flight after a drop of 2.9p to 336.8p.

Outside the FTSE 100 Index, shares in housebuilder Berkeley jumped 5 per cent after it unveiled the first payment in a decade-long plan to return to ?1.7 billion to shareholders. The interim dividend of 15p a share came as it reported a 40.7 per cent rise in half-year profits to ?142.2 million. Shares lifted 78p to 1728p.

Fellow builder Bellway was 1p lower at 1005p, even though it said completions were set to increase by around 5 per cent in the six months to January 31, with the operating margin slightly better than the previous half year.

The biggest FTSE 100 risers were Polymetal International up 22p to 1088p, Shire ahead 36p to 1900p, Burberry 24p higher at 1305p and IMI up 18p to 1090p.

The biggest FTSE 100 fallers were International Airline Group down 3.2p to 171.2p, ITV off 1.2p to 101.8p, G4S 2.9p lower at 249.2p and Pearson down 13p to 1177p.

15:30: The FTSE is up again at 5,905.20.

Germany?s central bank has cut its growth outlook for the next two years, leaving markets reeling.

The Bundesbank slashed the forecasts for 2013 with over one per cent from its June prediction of 1.6 per cent growth, and brought it down to 0.4 per cent.

The revised predictions comes a day after the European Central Bank cut its forecast for 2013 from 0.5 per cent growth to -0.3 per cent, leaving the Eurozone in a continued recession. Read more here.

15:15

There was good news on the world's biggest economy today after US unemployment fell to a four-year low despite the impact of Superstorm Sandy.

The country added a far better-than-expected 146,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 per cent, the lowest since December 2008.

?

The Labour Department figures confounded experts, who had predicted much weaker jobs growth due to the storm disruption.

Hiring remained steady during the storm as the jobs surge that began in July continued unabated.
The data gave Wall Street a boost in early trade, while London's FTSE 100 Index also made gains following the report.

But James Knightley, global economist at ING Bank, said the jobs cheer may not last amid fears over America's looming fiscal cliff.

He said the uncertainty over whether President Barack Obama will be able to secure a deal to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts on January 1 was making firms wary of hiring new staff.

?The longer it drags on, the more nervous corporates, households and financial markets will get, which has the potential to be very detrimental for activity,? he added.

There were also some mixed readings in today's jobs report, with the government making downward revisions to the number of jobs created in October and September, with 49,000 fewer jobs added than initially estimated.

Construction employment was also shown to have dropped 20,000 in a sign that the storm disrupted economic activity.

Senior German liaison-sales trader Anita Paluch said: ?Looking at the number presented by the US Labor Department it absolutely smashed the expectations, as US nonfarm sector added 146k new jobs, defying all the fears connected to the superstorm Sandy and its potential devastating effects on the world?s biggest economy.

?What?s a little bit more concerning is the fact that the numbers for two previous months had to be revised down. Falling unemployment rate due to people giving up the search for new work doesn?t bode well for economy either. The net impact on the Fed policy should be neutral and allow them to continue with the QE program.?

12:00

The release of a key report on the health of the US economy prevented investors from extending recent gains in the FTSE 100 Index today.

The top flight has been at a near two-month high on hopes of an end-of-year deal to avert a series of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts in the US.

But with the world's largest economy due to announce non-farm payrolls data later in the session, the FTSE 100 Index edged 8.2 points lower at 5893.2.

The jobs figure is likely to be the lowest since June, although analysts point out the result has been distorted by Superstorm Sandy in October.

Builder Bellway is 4p lower at ?10, even though it said completions were set to increase by around five per cent in the six months to January 31, with the operating margin slightly better than the previous half year.

10:30

The FTSE is down 4.75 points at 5,896.67. Alastair McCaig, market analyst at IG, said: ?A lethargic looking FTSE was down four points at 5896 by 10am, looking very much like those traders struggling to shake off the excesses of the previous night.

?Once again the magnetism of the 5900 level has proven too strong and after yesterday?s efforts to break away, the FTSE has been pulled back under. In order for the markets to make another charge it will need more support than this morning?s UK industrial and manufacturing economic data offered, along with confirmation that consumer inflation has risen from 3.2 per cent to 3.5 per cent.?

British manufacturing output fell in October at the fastest pace since June, reinforcing fears the economy will shrink again in the final three months of the year having just exited recession.

Manufacturing output dropped by 1.3 per cent on the month after a downwardly revised flat reading in September, and by 2.1 per cent on the year, the Office for National Statistics said this morning.

The wider reading of industrial output, which includes energy production and mining, also dropped in October, after oil and gas extraction posted the sharpest fall since records began in 1998.

'Very disappointing, triple dip [recession] - here we come," said Alan Clarke, economist at Scotiabank.

'Manufacturing was diabolical. Sadly, I think there is not a lot to suggest that it is temporary, survey data has been fairy downbeat.'

Both the monthly and annual manufacturing declines were the steepest since June, when extra public holidays dented production, and were far worse than predicted by economists.

10:00

The FTSE is down just 2.34 points at 5,899.08.

Head of market analysis and communications at Capital Spreads Angus Campbell said: 'There?s something about the 5900 level that the FTSE really doesn?t like as once again we see profit takers creep in around these levels this morning. Clients have managed to pick the top again although it?s hardly a mass sell off that?s got investors running for cover.'

Shares in housebuilder Berkeley rose by five per cent this morning as the company reported a rise in pretax profits of 40.7 per cent to ?142.2million.

The group also made its first payment to shareholders as part of its plan to return ?1.7billion in cash through milestone dates until September 2021, with a target total dividend of not less than ?13 per share. Read more here.

09:00

The FTSE 100 Index held its position at a two-month high today as investors awaited direction from the latest update on the US economy.

Ahead of the update, investors were happy to sit on recent gains and leave the FTSE 100 Index just three points lower at 5898.5.

Oil prices were also holding firm at 86 US dollars a barrel in New York as traders awaited the release of inflation, retail sales and factory output data from China on Sunday.

In the FTSE 100 Index, Tate & Lyle shares were more than 1 per cent higher after it reduced the risk on its pension scheme through an agreement with annuity provider Legal & General. Shares were 8.75p higher at 769.75p.

Marks & Spencer topped the fallers board with a decline of 6.8p to 391p, while Tesco was not far behind with a drop of 3.9p to 335.7p.

Outside the top flight, shares in housebuilder Berkeley jumped 5 per cent after it unveiled the first payment in a decade-long plan to return to ?1.7 billion to shareholders. The interim dividend of 15p a share came as it reported a 40.7 per cent rise in half-year profits to ?142.2 million. Shares lifted 87p to 1737p.

08:00

The FTSE 100 has opened marginally higher as caution over growth in Europe and U.S. jobs data prevented the index punching through fresh two-month highs.

London's blue chip index was up 6 points, or 0.1 per cent at 5,907.42, having closed at its highest level since mid October in the previous session.

?(Thursday's) move puts the index in a position to rally further if investors decide to bite the bullet and buy strength,? James Hyerczyk, an analyst at Autochartist, said.

?Based on the strong close, it looks as if sentiment is still to the upside; however a break back under 5,852.90 will signal that momentum has shifted back to the downside,? he said.

The index was struggling for momentum early on after Germany's Bundesbank cut its growth outlook for next year and ahead of November U.S. jobs data, which is expected to be weaker than October's, hit by Superstorm Sandy.

Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor, said: '"Persistent uncertainty" is not something the market wanted to hear, but Mario Draghi wasn't pulling any punches when it came to his statement about prospects for the eurozone as he cut growth forecasts and discussed the current downside risks.

'Sovereign debt issues in the euro area and fiscal policy decisions in the United States are both potential obstacles in the way of a sustained recovery.'

PREVIEW:

The FTSE 100 index is expected to open 12 to 16 points higher, or as much as 0.2 per cent this morning, according to financial bookmakers.

It closed up 9.34 points at 5,901.42 yesterday, hitting a two-month high fuelled by risk-sensitive stocks, but lagged European peers as wary investors met resistance around previous year highs.

London copper is steady this morning and was set to close the week little changed as traders focused on the progress of talks in the United States to avert a looming fiscal crisis, as well as the November jobs report.

The White House and Republicans in Congress dropped hints on Thursday that they had resumed low-level private talks on breaking the stalemate over the 'fiscal cliff' but refused to divulge details.

?The outcome of the 'fiscal cliff' issue will have a decisive impact on the equity market. It's really a close call whether they will manage an agreement this year or it might get postponed to the next year,? Tammo Greetfeld, equity strategist at UniCredit in Munich.

?If the stalemate continues in early 2013, then it would be negative for the equity market.?

On the macro economic front investors will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes for Britain's industrial sector as October's output figures are due to be released at 0930 GMT, following after they fell more sharply than expected in September.

The big data though will be out in the United States at 1330 GMT, where all eyes will be on the latest batch of U.S. non farm payrolls where investors will looking for signs of a recovery in the employment sector.

Superstorm Sandy is likely put a dent in U.S. employment growth with payrolls data expected to show an addition of 93,000 jobs in November, compared with October's gain of 171,000. The unemployment rate is seen holding steady at 7.9 per cent.

In Germany , Bundesbank cut its growth outlook for next year on Friday as the eurozone debt crisis takes its toll on the bloc's largest economy, but added that the country would return to its growth path soon.

The Bundesbank now expects Germany's economy to grow 0.7 per cent this year, down from an earlier forecast of 1.0 per cent, and 0.4 per cent next year, down from a June forecast of 1.6 per cent.

HBT: Bay signs one-year deal with Mariners

This is what?s known in the business as taking a flier.

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mariners have added Jason Bay on a one-year contract after he hit .165/.237/.299 in 194 at-bats last season and then accepted a buyout from the Mets. The Mariners will see if Bay can can recapture the form that helped him bat .267/.384/.537 with 36 homers and 119 RBI in his last year in the AL with the Red Sox in 2009. In the three years since, he?s batted .234/.318/.369 with a total of 26 homers in 986 at-bats.

Bay is a native of British Columbia and he already lives in Seattle in the offseason, so it?s the perfect situation for him.

Bay?s addition won?t stop the Mariners from continuing to pursue bats. They?ve been mentioned in connection with free agents Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher and Adam LaRoche, as well as in the Justin Upton trade speculation. If the Mariners do pick up another hitter or two, it?d seem to close off any route Bay might have to a starting job. Realistically, he?s probably going to end up competing with Casper Wells for one spot on the bench as a DH against lefties and occasional backup outfielder, and he?ll need a big spring just to have a shot.

The giant communications company you have probably never heard ...

The name Qualcomm might not be familiar to most, but the technology they have developed is inside almost every communication devices we use every single day of our lives. Some refer to Qualcomm as ?the giant communications company you probably have never heard off?.

Qualcomm is in the wireless communications business and they have been patenting technology since they started in 1985.

Irwin Jacobs founded the company with the initial idea to develop a commercial technology using satellites to monitor truck fleets.

Today OmniTRACS is the largest fleet management technology used in the United States.

Since 1985, Qualcomm has patented thousands of technologies that are used in most communication devices we use today from radios to smartphones and even GPS?s.

They?ve grown into communications giant with a current market cap of $108 billion. Just recently they surpassed Intel who at the moment has a market cap of around $100 billion.

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Qualcomm?s headquarters in San Diego, California to learn more about their technologies and what they are planning for the future.

The first thing you see as you enter the reception area is their impressive display of some of their patents along the wall. Currently Qualcomm owns over 13 000 communication patents.

One of Qualcomm?s main focuses today is on smartphone devices. Their Snapdragon chip, currently in its 4th generation, is impressive. The technology they have managed to fit onto such a small space is quite extraordinary. On that tiny chip you will find the heart and brains of the smart device.? The processor, graphics, connectivity and multi media are all on one chip the size of a coin. And it does all this in an incredibly efficient way.

Currently over 50 percent of smartphones shipped have Qualcomm?s Snapdragon processor inside.

Qualcomm?s next big drive is into Africa. They believe that 3G devices still have a big role to play in Africa. Snapdragon chipsets are being reengineered to work more efficiently on African mobile networks that have their own unique challenges compared to other markets.

The price of smartphones is also dropping rapidly. Today manufacturers are making smartphones with the same specs as a high-end device 12 months ago and coming in at a price point of around $100.

LTE, the next generation wireless broadband still has a few years to go before it is adopted extensively in Africa. Spectrum will be an issue, and LTE will only grow when the digital television migration takes place and frees up current frequencies to be used for high-speed wireless broadband.

The smartphone revolution is just starting, this year alone Gartner predicts that 820 million smartphones will be sold and Qualcomm have predicted that 5 billion smartphones will be sold between 2012 and 2016.

To put this astounding growth into perspective Gartner says that 297 million smartphones were sold in 2010 and 472 million in 2012.

Qualcomm are also working on medical applications to be used in conjunction with smartphones. As these devices become more sophisticated, new applications and usage models are being developed. Already cameras in smartphones can be used to diagnose illnesses in eyes and because the image quality is so good, photographs can be used to pick up rare skin conditions for example.

Remember Star Trek and Dr McCoy?s tricorder? In the sci-fi series, the tricorder was a hand held computing device, that had a sensor attached to it which after scanning someone, it would diagnose various conditions of the human body. Those futuristic devices that we saw in Star Trek and other shows are now becoming a reality thanks to smartphone devices.

After Sandy, NYC pins housing hope on repairs

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facing Superstorm Sandy's daunting toll of wreckage and displacement in the nation's largest city, officials have put much of their hopes and hundreds of millions of dollars into jump-starting repairs to make homes livable.

Federal and city officials see the strategy ? focusing on getting people back into their own homes, not temporary housing ? as an innovative and nimble answer to the challenge of housing thousands of storm victims in a notoriously expensive and crowded area.

But with relatively few homes fixed so far, questions are emerging about whether the "rapid repairs" initiative can live up to its name.

More than 10,000 homeowners have signed up for NYC Rapid Repairs in the three weeks since Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched the initiative to bring in hundreds of contractors to restore power, heat and other essentials free of charge.

Contractors have done initial assessments of about 7,000 homes in the city and 2,000 in similar initiatives on Long Island, but just about 400 projects have been completed so far.

Officials stress that they're still ramping up the program. But a community meeting last week in hard-hit Staten Island boiled over with complaints that repairs and other aid aren't coming fast enough, a familiar refrain in storm-damaged areas.

Noreen Connolly-Skammel's home on the Rockaway peninsula in Queens was hit by a basement fire and then a flood that swamped the cellar and two feet of the first floor. She said the NYC Rapid Repairs program was swift at first, conducting an assessment within two to three days after her call. But she heard nothing further for about two weeks, when she was told a new assessment had to be done.

Anxious to get the work going, she and her husband spent about $8,300 of their own money on boiler, hot water and electrical repairs ? the very sort the government program might have done for free.

"I wish they were a little more rapid," she said, noting that the program has since pledged to help with other repairs.

Officials are asking for patience with the first-of-its-kind effort.

"We are moving as quickly as we can on these repairs," Michael Byrne, the Federal Emergency Management Agency official supervising Sandy recovery in New York state, said in a statement Monday.

FEMA is paying much of the bill for the home-repair program, while also subsidizing hotel stays and apartments for thousands of Sandy victims ? help some say has come promptly, but not without snags.

For FEMA, Sandy represents one of the biggest tests since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 rendered 300,000 homes uninhabitable along the Gulf Coast, displaced more than 1 million people and spurred a national examination of disaster housing.

Citing the confusing and problem-plagued process of housing people after Katrina, FEMA's 2009 National Disaster Housing Strategy calls for improvements from exploring new forms of temporary housing to providing more social services to the displaced.

Yet city, state and federal officials didn't have a ready answer when they realized that as many as 40,000 city residents might need temporary quarters after Sandy, an estimate that quickly shrank as many homes got heat and electricity back.

Byrne says he feels FEMA ? which has OK'd more than $673 million in housing and home-repair aid so far in New York alone ? has at least gotten a handle on the disaster. But "my job is to always feel like I'm missing something," he said.

More than a month after the Oct. 29 storm, the need for housing is a moving target that hangs on day-to-day developments for thousands of people.

Roughly 6,700 buildings around the city require significant repairs to be habitable, and about 750 more are deemed structurally unsound, according to city Buildings Department statistics. And in one measure of the demand for help, about 2,100 households are in FEMA-paid hotel rooms. Some storm victims also have gotten money for apartment rentals; a number isn't immediately available.

With her first child due on Christmas Eve, Corinna Sabatacos and fiance Steven Ferrara had to move out of their severely damaged Rockaway house. They say they ended up in a hotel that doesn't take FEMA payments and have gotten conflicting answers on whether the more than $2,000 bill will be covered.

"Things just change daily, and that's what's so frustrating," Sabatacos said. The couple expects to move this week into an apartment, aided by a $1,200-a-month FEMA rent subsidy.

As displacement and uncertainty continue, some officials recently broached a tried but controversial approach ? trailers, a housing standby for FEMA in many disasters.

But Byrne sees them as an unpromising option in a densely packed city, especially since some of the open spaces suggested for a trailer encampment are in flood zones.

By hastening repairs, officials hope instead to solve the temporary housing crunch by shrinking it.

It's not uncommon for FEMA to pay for crucial fixes, such as replacing a furnace or fixing a flood-damaged electrical system. But usually, the agency assesses the damage and insurance and gives homeowners a check, leaving them to arrange the work.

FEMA and city officials reasoned they could get homes fixed faster if the city hired contractors, coordinated repair requests, dispatched the workers and paid for it all directly. The free repairs come on top of the $31,900-per-family cap for FEMA aid.

The city has agreed to spend $500 million on the effort; FEMA is to repay at least 75 percent. Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk counties have similar, but so far smaller, initiatives. A program like rapid repairs is not taking place in New Jersey as of now, but FEMA officials there say they are looking at a number of options for the state.

About a half-dozen NYC Rapid Repairs workers were busy last week in Stephen Murray's gutted Staten Island home, its windows about five feet off the floor speckled with debris. The line marks how high the water rose as Murray fled Sandy in a neighbor's pickup truck.

The workers expected to spend several days replacing the flood-damaged wiring, furnace and hot water heater and putting down plywood where sodden floors were ripped out ? not restoring the home completely, but making it safe. Murray and his wife are living in an apartment in the meantime, with FEMA's help.

Both retired after workplace injuries; they couldn't afford flood insurance or the $60,000 estimate to repair the two-bedroom bungalow. But he figures the city repairs, FEMA aid and elbow grease from friends and family should be enough.

"If the city didn't come in here and help me, I don't know what I would have done," Murray said.

As he spoke, a light bulb flicked on overhead, a sign that the workers had restored the home's connection to the power grid.

"Oh, man," Murray said. "You have no idea what it feels like."
