Amid GOP unease, Romney turns eye to swing states

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mitt Romney's visit to Colorado on Sunday is part of an intensified schedule focused on the most competitive states as the Republican presidential nominee tries to counter criticism from some in his own party that his campaign is veering off course with about six weeks to go in the race.

The evening speech at a Denver-area high school, his first public event of the weekend, comes with Romney facing increasing pressure to spend less time raising money and more time explaining his plans to voters.

President Barack Obama had no official business or campaign activity scheduled.

From Denver, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 and held by Republicans four years earlier.

It's the last full week before the presidential debates shift the campaign into a new phase, which Romney advisers suggest could prove pivotal after a period marked by negative attention, missteps and Republican concerns.

Already facing reports of internal finger-pointing and foreign policy questions, Romney endured a difficult week during which a secretly recorded video surfaced showing the former Massachusetts governor said that almost half of Americans are dependent upon government and see themselves as victims.

Romney's allies worked to reframe the video as an opportunity to draw a contrast between the level of government dependency that Romney and Obama envision.

"I think we had a good week last week," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." ''We were able to frame up the debate last week in the sense of what future do we want and do you want out there for your kids and grandkids?"

In an interview set to air Sunday night, Romney told CBS' "60 Minutes" that his campaign is moving in the right direction. "It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said, according to remarks released in advance by CBS.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest that Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

On Friday, Romney released his 2011 tax returns showing income of $13.7 million, largely from investment income. He spent much of his time this weekend raising money in California, which Democratic presidential nominees have carried for nearly a quarter-century.

While Romney was at a Beverly Hills hotel on Saturday, Obama worked to squash GOP hopes for a resurgence in Wisconsin. He assailed Romney's economic approach before an energized gathering of 18,000, Obama's biggest crowd of the campaign.

Obama faulted Romney for advancing a top-down economic approach that "never works."

"The country doesn't succeed when only the folks at the very top are doing well," Obama said. "We succeed when the middle class is doing well."

Romney raised $6 million at the Saturday evening event that attracted celebrities Dennis Miller and Gary Sinise. Before a group of more than 1,000 California Republicans, Romney kept up his criticism of the president for fostering what Romney said was a culture of dependency.

"This is a tough time. These are our brothers and sisters. These are not statistics. These are people," Romney declared. "The president's policies ? these big-government, big-tax monolithic policies ? are not working."

In a more personal slap at Obama, Romney's campaign on Sunday released a television ad citing a new book by Washington Post editor Bob Woodward that claims that during a 2009 conference call on stimulus negotiations, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., put a verbose Obama on mute. "If he cannot lead his own party, how can he lead America?" the ad says.

Pelosi has denied the incident ever occurred. Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, responding to the ad, said Romney's efforts to ramp up attacks on Obama were missing the point.

"It's not about them tearing down the president. They simply haven't offered ideas about how they're going to lift up the country," Axelrod said on "This Week." ''And until they do that, I think the American people are going to continue to reject him."

Obama also looked to celebrities to help raise cash and keep bankrolling ads already saturating the most contested states.

Baseball great Hank Aaron supplied the star power at Obama's Milwaukee fundraisers.

"As one who wore the number 44 on his back for decades, I ask you to join me in helping the 44th president of the United States hit a grand slam," said the 78-year-old Aaron.

But Obama's schedule has focused more on voters than donors in recent weeks. The president's campaign says Obama attended seven fundraisers and 14 public events since the day after the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago.

Over the last week alone, Romney has attended five public events, including three rallies, and more than a dozen fundraisers.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden defended the fundraising focus, while highlighting a shift toward swing states in the coming days

"We're here raising the resources we're going to need to compete in all those battleground states through Election Day," Madden said. "That's also been matched with a really intense battle ground state schedule that's going to be coming up starting Sunday night. We're keeping very busy."

But conservative worry remains.

"The Romney campaign has to get turned around. This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant 'rolling calamity,'" columnist Peggy Noonan, a former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, wrote late last week in The Wall Street Journal.

In Beverly Hills, Romney's California finance committee chairman Thomas Tellefsen tried to reassure supporters. "I wanted to share some thoughts with you tonight. They can provide you some comfort. Polls are not elections. The voters have not yet spoken," Tellefsen said.

Chicago's Emanuel goes to court over teachers strike

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The confrontation between striking teachers and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel moved to court on Monday where lawyers for the mayor sought to stop the walkout in President Barack Obama's home city just weeks before the November 6 election.

Lawyers for Chicago Public Schools filed a complaint in circuit court against the Chicago Teachers Union seeking a preliminary injunction "to end the strike immediately" citing two reasons: danger to "public health and safety" of the students and alleged violation of Illinois state law that prohibits strikes except for wages and benefits.

"State law expressly prohibits the CTU from striking over non-economic issues, such as layoff and recall policies, teacher evaluations, class sizes and the length of the school day and year. The CTU's repeated statements and recent advertising campaign have made clear that these are exactly the subjects over which the CTU is striking," the school district said in a statement.

It was not clear when the court would schedule a hearing on the complaint, but lawyers expected one later on Monday.

The dispute between Emanuel, a former top White House aide to Obama, and organized labor had been close to resolution on Sunday when top union leaders recommended to a meeting of union activists that the 5-day strike be suspended.

But a majority of the 800 or so union delegates, wary of promises made by Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools, ignored the leadership and extended the strike until at least Tuesday.

The famously short-tempered Emanuel immediately issued a statement saying he would go to court to try to have the strike declared illegal.

"We are done negotiating," Chicago Board of Education president David Vitale said on Monday.

UNCHARTED TERRITORY

Emanuel's move took the dispute into unchartered territory as no injunction request has been filed in an Illinois education labor dispute since 1984, when the state gave Chicago teachers the right to strike. It also deepens the rift between the Democratic mayor, a top fund raiser for Obama's campaign, and a labor group that generally backs Democratic candidates.

Some 29,000 public school teachers and support staff have been on strike since September 10 over Emanuel's demand for sweeping education reforms.

Strikes in the United States usually are over wages and benefits but Emanuel is offering an average pay rise of more than 17 percent over four years, which the union accepts.

The surprise developments on Sunday raised questions about how parents of the 350,000 of children out of school would react and how union members would respond to Emanuel's legal move.

"I do think going into the second week there is concern about the children being out of school longer and losing the good will of the public," said DePaul University professor Andrea Kayne Kaufman. "Like everyone else, I was disappointed that there wasn't a ratification."

Opinion polls last week showed Chicago voters supporting the union, but that could change as the strike drags on.

Willie Nawls, who has four children in Chicago public schools, said he has been fortunate because his two oldest children in high school could take care of the younger two.

"I'm very upset," he said of the strike. "I'll be patient with the union and see what they try to work out."

The mayor's negotiators and the union had worked out a compromise agreement on Friday that they hoped would end the strike. As part of the deal, Emanuel backed off some of his demands on teacher evaluations, agreeing to phase in the use of student testing to review teachers and dropping his insistence on pay based on merit.

The showdown has highlighted a national debate over how to improve failing inner city schools. Like Chicago, many major city school districts are losing students to the suburbs and have a high percentage of children from low-income households.

Emanuel, backed by a coalition of financiers and philanthropists, believes that the best way to improve the schools is to set higher standards for teachers and to close low-performing schools and replace the staff.

The union wants cities to invest in traditional neighborhood schools and teacher training rather than closing them down. The children live in poor and crime-ridden neighborhoods and need more support to succeed, the union says.

Chicago teachers mistrust Emanuel and the school district because scores of schools have been closed in recent years. They fear Emanuel will close up to 20 percent of Chicago schools once the strike ends, which would lead to mass layoffs of unionized teachers.

They accuse Emanuel of trying to "privatize" public education by allowing outside groups to run some "charter" or "contract" schools outside the union but financed with public funds.

The dispute has become personal, with union leader Karen Lewis calling Emanuel a "bully" and a "liar." Lewis has said Emanuel does not show the union proper respect and his policies will have disastrous effects in poor communities.

Racial tension has been a backdrop to the disagreement, with the union saying a disproportionate number of African-American teachers have been laid off as schools are closed.

Back to the Basics ? Thoughts From A Maverick's Perspective

September 16, 2012

It?s been a while since I put up a blog post.

Yes, I say this a lot.

?

I realize that it?s because, since the day I started advertising my blog for people to read (when I wrote ?The Naija Blonde?, I sorta lost the plot. I forgot that my blog is basically personal, and focused on putting up creative content all the time.

?

*sigh*

?

The last few months have been? trying, to say the least. Truth is, at the end of this year (by the grace of God), I?ll have gone through the most difficult year of my life, and I?ll have lived to talk about it. I know that things won?t necessarily get easier, but? ah well. I should probably do some form of a post about it. I don?t know. Maybe I will, maybe I won?t.

?

I think I?ll try to do shit like this more often. Write as a blogger, not a writer. This isn?t to say I?m gonna stop doing creative writing. This year, I?ve written for The Naked Convos and AfroSays, and I think I?m going to keep doing that. I also want to write for Sawaleh (psst! Secret! I?m writing something for them write now), and a few other blogs. So I?m still going to be doing creative writing. I just may not be putting a lot of it up here.

?

Speaking about writing creatively, I was on the last major AfroSays project, ?False Lives?. I?m really proud to have been a part of this project, because it?s probably the biggest thing I?ve ever written. It challenged my creativity a lot. I?m also happy because I was going through a LOT at the time when I wrote it (it took me about five months to write), but I still managed to put down something that a lot of people seemed to like. I?m grateful to The Alchemist for including me in his project, and for being a fantastic editor. Also really grateful to xoAfro (my brother) for helping me through that story; he nagged me into doing it in ways I didn?t imagine I could.

?

xoAfro set me up on the pathway for the next story I have in mind so? watch out.

?

If you haven?t read ?False Lives? on AfroSays, go read it now. Click Here.

?

I also started up a podcast with some of my friends, called The GhenGhen. I really want to tell you guys what it?s about, but I really think it?d be more fun if you simply found out for yourself. So, go to http://www.theghenghen.com/ and peep what I?m doing.

?

Okay then, that?s about it for now. I?ll be doing this more often so? yeah?

PST: The Oct. 16 US qualifier in KC will rock

There are certain advantages to being a ProSoccerTalk regular. Here?s a big one today:

It?s a ?heads up.?? I am telling each of you right now, get your tickets for Oct. 16 at Livestrong Sporting Park. There aren?t many left. You have been warned.

Yes, it?s a Tuesday, and that makes travel a toughie. I get it. But you don?t want to miss this chance.

Looking at the standings (below) there is almost no scenario in which the United States will walk into its Oct. 16 qualifier against Guatemala, the Americans? final semifinal round match, with a place in the final round in hand. That means the atmosphere, barring some highly unlikely result in matches four days prior, will be nervous, charged, electric and hectic that night at Livestrong Sporting Park outside Kansas City.

In other words, just like last night ? but perhaps even more explosively delightful. Unlike Crew Stadium, Livestrong is blessed with a roof, which holds in the noise. The place will be a cauldron, alight with beautifully nervous energy.

The United States plays at Antigua and Barbuda on Oct. 12, the same night Guatemala faces Jamaica in the other Group A contest. Antigua has been eliminated, leaving the other three competing for two spots in final round World Cup qualifying.

(MORE: Mid-sized MLS venues are the RIGHT choice for World Cup qualifiers)

Let?s assume Jurgen Klinsmann?s team takes care of business in Antigua. Even then, most scenarios leave the United States needing a tie, at very least, in order to join Mexico and four other sides in the final round, the so-called ?Hexagonal.?

(If the United States lose or draws in Antigua ? well, the Panic Bottom will not be big enough for all of us to push. So, let?s not even talk about that.)

I spoke to Sporting Kansas City officials minutes ago. About 2,000 tickets remain for the Oct. 16 contest.

So, a little helpful stage-setting here: Chill in the Midwest air. A place in final round qualifying at stake (which means the World Cup 2014 dream could die, right there in Kansas City, almost two years away from the actual event). A stadium that knows how to throw a soccer party ?

Yes. Give me some of that. Extra helpings, in fact.

At the very, very least, circle that date on the ol? calendar.

The CONCACAF Group A standings are here:

Ryan: Attacks a reminder world needs US leadership

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan says President Barack Obama's defense spending cuts "breed weakness" ? a vulnerability the United States can't afford following the killings of four Americans in Libya.

His comments at a town hall meeting Wednesday near Green Bay came after a question about national defense from a man in the audience wearing a hat indicating he was a Bronze Star recipient. Ryan began the meeting asking for a moment of silence for the four Americans killed overseas.

"Peace through strength works," Ryan said after the question. "It is very important that a president speak with a singular voice representing our principles and values. We don't want people around the world wondering what our values are."

Ryan then repeated his frequent criticism of Obama on defense, saying "I believe the president's devastating defense cuts breed weakness."

Obama on Wednesday vowed the United States would "work with the Libyan government to bring to justice" those who killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi.

At his Wisconsin gathering, Ryan said the attacks are a reminder that the world needs American leadership.

"We do not want a world climate where our adversaries are so tempted to test us and our allies are worried about trusting us," Ryan said to loud applause. "That is unfortunately the path we are on in America."

Joe Zepecki, Wisconsin communications director for the Obama campaign, blamed potential defense cuts on Ryan and congressional Republicans.

"Once again Mr. Ryan has chosen to stick with the tried and true Romney playbook of launching debunked attacks against President Obama ? this time attempting to blame him for automatic defense cuts when the only thing standing in the way of preventing them is the refusal by Congressional Republicans, led by Paul Ryan, to ask for one more dime from millionaires and billionaires," Zepecki said in a statement.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, spent much of the town hall session repeating well-worn campaign themes warning of an economic collapse, criticizing Obama for the level of national debt and promising a more frugal federal government under Romney.

Ryan said the collapse in 2008 wasn't expected, while the new threat that looms is.

"Remember the Jimmy Carter years?" he asked. "We don't want to repeat the Jimmy Carter years?"

Ryan was introduced to the crowd by Gov. Scott Walker, who promised that for the first time since he was in high school and Ryan was in middle school, Wisconsin would vote for a Republican for president. The last time that happened was in 1984.

Many in the crowd waved orange fans that said "Defend freedom, defeat Obama."

Wanda Wanie, 44, of De Pere came to the event with her 14 year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. Wanie said she agreed with Ryan's criticisms of Obama on foreign policy.

"I think the president right now spends more time golfing than the things he needs to be doing," she said.

Ryan, a native of Janesville, has spent a lot of time in his home state since joining Romney's ticket in August. He came to the stage wearing a Green Bay Packers polo shirt.

Wisconsin, and its 10 electoral votes, has become more of a battleground with the increase in advertising and appearances by the candidates. Vice President Joe Biden plans to campaign on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Thursday.

Gene therapy technique for children with immune disorder improved

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? By including chemotherapy as a conditioning regimen prior to treatment, researchers have developed a refined gene therapy approach that safely and effectively restores the immune system of children with a form of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), according to a study published online September 11 in Blood, the Journal of the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

SCID is a group of rare and debilitating genetic disorders that affect the normal development of the immune system in newborns. Infants with SCID are prone to serious, life-threatening infections within the first few months of life and require extensive treatment for survival beyond infancy.

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency, which accounts for approximately 15 percent of all SCID cases, develops when a gene mutation prohibits the production of ADA, an enzyme that breaks down toxic molecules that can accumulate to harmful levels and kill lymphocytes, the specialized white blood cells that help make up the immune system. In its absence, infants with ADA-deficient SCID lack almost all immune defenses and their condition is almost always fatal within two years if left untreated. Standard treatment for ADA-deficient SCID is a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) from a sibling or related donor; however, finding a matched donor can be difficult and transplants can carry significant risks. An alternate treatment method, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), involves regular injections of the ADA enzyme to maintain the immune system and can help restore immune function; however, the treatments are extremely expensive and painful for the young patients and the effects are often only temporary.

Given the limitations of HSCT and ERT, in the 1990s researchers began investigating the efficacy of gene therapy for ADA-deficient SCID. They discovered that they could "correct" the function of a mutated gene by adding a healthy copy into the cells of the body that help fight infectious diseases. Since then, there have been significant advances in gene therapy for SCID, yet successful gene therapy in patients with ADA-deficient SCID has been seen in only a small series of children due to the difficulty of introducing a healthy ADA gene into bone marrow stem cells and to engraft these cells back into the patients.

"Although the basic steps of gene therapy for patients with SCID have been known for a while, technical and clinical challenges still exist and we wanted to find an optimized gene therapy protocol to restore immunity for young children with ADA-deficient SCID," said Fabio Candotti, MD, one of the study's senior authors, senior investigator in the Genetics and Molecular Biology Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, and chair of the ASH Scientific Committee on Immunology and Host Defense.

To determine whether an enhanced gene therapy approach would improve immunity in children with ADA-deficient SCID, the teams of Dr. Candotti and Donald B. Kohn, MD, director of the Human Gene Medicine Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Professor of Pediatrics and of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, and a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA, conducted a clinical trial in 10 patients with the disorder. For the first time, Drs. Candotti and Kohn and their team of investigators compared two different retroviral vectors, MND-ADA and GCsapM-ADA, to transport normal ADA genes into the young patients' bone marrow stem cells as well as two different treatment plans in preparation for receiving gene therapy. Following therapy, investigators found that more bone marrow stem cells were marked with the MND-ADA vector, demonstrating its superiority over the GCsapM-ADA vector.

The investigators also sought to determine whether providing a low dose of chemotherapy prior to gene therapy, known as a pre-transplant conditioning regimen, would successfully deplete the young patients' bone marrow stem cells and make room for gene-corrected stem cells. In four patients, gene therapy was performed without chemotherapy, and the patients remained on ERT throughout the entire procedure to evaluate the efficiency of ERT combined with gene therapy. While these patients did not experience any adverse effects, they also did not experience a significant increase in their levels of the ADA enzyme. They also maintained low absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC) and minimal immune system function, leading the researchers to believe that ERT may weaken the therapy's effect by diluting the number of gene-corrected lymphocytes.

The remaining six patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug busulfan prior to gene therapy and ERT was discontinued prior to the gene therapy procedure. A significant increase in ADA was observed in all six patients; half of them remain off of ERT with partial immune reconstitution -- findings that support results from prior trials in Italy and the United Kingdom using chemotherapy prior to gene therapy and discontinuting ERT. While the ALC of all six patients declined sharply in the first few months due to combined effects of busulfan administration and ERT withdrawal, their counts increased from six to 24 months, even in the three patients that remained off of ERT. After adjusting the chemotherapy dosage, investigators were able to determine an optimal level for enhancing the efficacy of the gene-therapy-corrected cells with minimal toxicity.

This study is the first to detail comparisons of ADA-deficient SCID patient outcomes between those treated with gene therapy who have not received pre-transplant conditioning while continuing to receive ERT with those receiving pre-transplant conditioning without the administration of ERT. This study is also the first to compare two different viral vectors to transport normal ADA genes into patient bone marrow.

"We were very happy that in this trial we were able to see a benefit in the patients after we modified the protocol," said Dr. Kohn. "Doctors treating ADA-deficient SCID have had too few options for too long, and we hope this will provide them with an efficient and effective treatment for this devastating disease."

Most popular baby names, 2011 vs. 1911: ?William? stands the test of time

Popular baby names in the U.S. have changed drastically over the past century (KVUE-TV Austin)Popular baby names in the U.S. have changed dramatically over the past 100 years. But some things never change, including our nation's love of the name "William."

Data from the Social Security Administration shows that virtually none of the top 20 most popular names from 1911 is still in the rankings in the most recent statistics from 2011.

For example, the most popular names in 2011 were "Jacob" for boys and "Sophia" for girls. But in 1911, they were "John" and "Mary." Again, as mentioned above, neither "John" nor "Mary" even appears in the top 20 for 2011:

2011
Male name Female name
1 Jacob Sophia
2 Mason Isabella
3 William Emma
4 Jayden Olivia
5 Noah Ava
6 Michael Emily
7 Ethan Abigail
8 Alexander Madison
9 Aiden Mia
10 Daniel Chloe
11 Anthony Elizabeth
12 Matthew Ella
13 Elijah Addison
14 Joshua Natalie
15 Liam Lily
16 Andrew Grace
17 James Samantha
18 David Avery
19 Benjamin Sofia
20 Logan Aubrey

But one name has resolutely stood the test of time: William. One hundred years later, "William" has fallen only one slot, from No. 2 to No. 3, in the list of popular male names. "James" has also managed to stick around, dropping from No. 3 in 1911 to No. 17 in 2011.

For girls, only "Elizabeth" has stayed on the list, dropping just four spots over the past century, from No. 7 to No. 11.

1911
Male name Female name
1 John Mary
2 William Helen
3 James Margaret
4 George Dorothy
5 Robert Ruth
6 Joseph Anna
7 Charles Elizabeth
8 Frank Mildred
9 Edward Marie
10 Thomas Frances
11 Henry Alice
12 Walter Florence
13 Harry Lillian
14 Willie Rose
15 Albert Ethel
16 Harold Evelyn
17 Paul Edna
18 Arthur Gladys
19 Raymond Louise
20 Richard Catherine

In recent years, the authors of Freakonomics have famously tracked the ever-evolving choice of baby names in America. And other sites have joined the trend, pointing to changing baby names as a sign of the decline of civilization. But for all the changes in the top 20, the list of popular baby names still reads as fairly tame.

What would be truly fascinating is comparing the top 100 names of 1911 with those of today. What were the 1911 equivalents of "Braxlee" and "Diesel"?

There were most likely a lot of "Johns" and "Marys" in this bunch (Library of Congress)

Throughout the summer, Dixon has been performing an original song, “Never Gone,” on the Idols LIVE! tour. It will be available on iTunes September 25.

Colton was one of the more popular Idol contestants on Season 11.

Microsoft, Nokia pin hopes on new Lumia as mobile war escalates

HELSINKI/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nokia and Microsoft Corp will take the wraps off the struggling European company's most powerful smartphone on Wednesday, in what may be their last major shot at winning back a market lost to Apple, Samsung and Google.

The world's largest software maker and the Finnish company that once dominated the cellphone market will showcase the device in New York on Wednesday morning and demo it for industry insiders about the same time in Helsinki.

Microsoft and Nokia hope the new Lumia will become a potent weapon in an escalating global mobile industry war.

Google's Motorola Mobility intends to show off its latest smartphone on Wednesday, Amazon.com Inc will unwrap new Kindle Fire tablets the day after, and Apple is expected to unveil the latest version of its seminal iPhone on September 12. Samsung Electronics says it will sell its own Windows phone as early as next month.

The Lumia 920 and smaller Lumia 820 will run on the latest Windows Phone operating software, which Microsoft hopes will rival Apple's iOS and Google's Android to become a third mobile platform. If the new phones do not appeal to consumers, it could spell the end for loss-making Nokia and deal a serious blow to Microsoft's attempts to regain its footing in the market.

Leaked pictures of the two models show a similar look to Nokia's previous Windows phones, but analysts say these alone will not be enough to turn the corner.

"There have to be more devices, and their features have to stand out more. There has to be a 'wow' device," said Hannu Rauhala, analyst at Pohjola Bank, who cut his recommendation on Nokia's shares to "reduce" on Tuesday.

The stakes are high for both Nokia and Microsoft.

The Finnish handset maker has logged more than 3 billion euros ($3.8 billion) in operating losses in the past 18 months, forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs and pursue asset sales.

Its share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday, before the iPhone was launched in 2007.

Windows phones have only captured 3.7 percent of the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Android phones have 68 percent, while Apple has 17 percent.

For Microsoft, successful Lumia sales could convince more handset makers and carriers to support its Windows Phone 8 software, which promises faster performance and a customizable start screen.

Last week Samsung became the first to announce a smartphone running Windows Phone 8, at the IFA trade show in Berlin. But it was not able to provide the model to visitors at the show.

ECOSYSTEM WARRIORS

Apple's first iPhone revolutionized the mobile industry, popularizing the model of a third-party developer "ecosystem," today considered pivotal to the success of any operating system.

Part of the reason for the limited success of Windows phones is that they support only 100,000 or so apps, compared with about 500,000 or more for Android or iPhones.

There is also the interconnection between apps and content, typified by Apple's iTunes and iCloud, which share content across devices, that acts as a powerful disincentive to switch between vendors.

"Much has been made of Windows Phone emerging as ?the third ecosystem' in mobile. This is a huge task in itself, but Apple's and Google's entrenched positions where consumers have already invested heavily in apps and content makes switching platforms less attractive," said Ben Wood from mobile sector research firm CCS Insight.

The new phone software is similar to the Windows 8 desktop and tablet software to be released on October 26, making it easier for developers to write apps for both, and Microsoft hopes this will boost the platform's popularity.

But the Windows operating system is by no means universally popular in the PC market, so consumers will not necessarily come to the mobile phone equivalent with unalloyed goodwill.

"Consumer perceptions of the Windows brand have been shaped by PC usage. Although Windows 8 will help, there is still plenty of work required to overcome historical prejudices in the transition to mobile," said Wood.

The new Lumias could, however, benefit from the continuing decline in Research In Motion Ltd's BlackBerry, and also from a recent legal blow to the Android operating system.

A California jury decided last month that some of Samsung's hot-selling Android smartphones copied features of the iPhone, which may result in import bans and drive handset makers to put more resources into making Windows-based phones.

But for Nokia and Microsoft to exploit that window of opportunity, it must first find favor with consumers, who so far have shown little enthusiasm for smartphones with Windows software.

($1 = 0.7947 euros)

Billiards Tips: Master The Creative Shot

By: Akaash Prasad

Regardless of how long you have been playing the sport, there is always room for improvement when it comes to bringing your A-Game to the pool table. While it is true that your ability to master the game depends on the quality of your pool cues, it is also essential that you take the time to truly practice and master both basic and creative shots. You don't have to be a mathematician to perfect the art of creating angles for the perfect shot.
The Break Shot
You can never practice your break shot enough, as this important play should accomplish three key things: scatter the billiard balls, sink at least one ball, and keep the cue ball at the table's center. A little creative thinking and practice will ensure that you accomplish all three and get the upper hand.
Using different pool cues (specifically, a break cue) is smart here, as a break cue sick is lighter, allowing for more speed and control. You must also ensure that the rack is tightened, and move your bridge distance further back from the cue ball; this helps boost acceleration. You may also consider breaking from the rail due to the fact that the angle of approach will be more conducive to pocketing balls.
Rail Shots
For those with a fear of rail shots, it is imperative that you master the skill through practice. Try lining up all balls so that they are positioned frozen along the rail, bordering the entire table. Now try to sink all of the balls in corner pockets without using combinations. This will boost your confidence and teach you what to expect when you approach the ball from different angles.
Practice Drills
One simple way to sharpen your skills while gaining a better understanding of the mechanics of where your billiard balls will go when hit from certain angles and speeds is to drill yourself on shot making. Line up five balls on one side of the pool table with the cue ball at a forty-five degree angle to the innermost ball (this creates a perfect shot to the opposite corner pocket). Shoot the five balls in order. Each time you miss, place the ball back where it was and make note of your speed, angle of approach, and where the ball went.
Now break open those pool cue cases and start practicing so you can get to master your shots!

Healthy Food Tips: Top 5 Best Muscle Building Foods for Fitness

A diet rich in protein and complex carbohydrates is essential for building lean muscle and losing excess fat. Proper nutrition requires some basic knowledge, discipline, and consistency. When you work out, the stress of weight lifting damages muscle fibers. In order for your body to recover, you need to consume quality foods that contain amino acids and carbs. The foods you eat on a daily basis are responsible for helping you recover from your workout sessions.

Here are top five best muscle building foods for fitness enthusiasts:

Chicken

Chicken is a preferred choice among bodybuilders and athletes worldwide. This food is cheap and easy to cook. One chicken breast has approximately 25 grams of protein and less than 130 calories. For a rich flavor, you can marinate chicken in seasoned fruit juice. Use bold seasonings like minced hot peppers, infused vinegar, and curry.

Lean Ground Beef

If you want to put on some muscle, include beef into your diet. This type of meat is an excellent source of zinc and iron, two essential muscle building nutrients. Beef also contains two grams of creatine for every 16 ounces. Red meat is packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals. Each cut has a different amount of fat, protein, and calories. Beef doesn't contain any carbohydrates.

Almonds

Almonds are one of the best sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight against free radical damage after strenuous physical activity. Recent studies have shown that men who eat almonds on a regular basis have a 67 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's disease. Almonds also contain protean and healthy fats. They are the perfect snack for satisfying late-morning hunger.

Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds provide 25 grams of protein per 100 grams. Available both shelled and unshelled, they can be eaten roasted or row. Sunflower foods are rich in fiber, which helps improve digestion. In addition to protein and fiber, they contain vitamin E, linoleic acid, selenium, and vitamin B2. These essential nutrients support lean muscle growth, boost energy levels, and promote healthy adrenal glands.

Brown Rice

Brown rich is loaded with complex carbohydrates and fiber, providing a sustained release of energy throughout the day. The American Dietetics Association recommends active individuals to have a diet rich in complex carbohydrates from quinoa, whole wheat pasta, oats, brown rice, and sweet potatoes. Whether you want to lose fat and get ripped before a fitness competition, or you are trying to build muscle, brown rice should be on your list.

Whether you want to build muscle, lose weight, or have more energy, search for healthy food tips before starting a new diet.
