New Mexico wildfire spreads smoke across state

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Firefighters are battling a massive wildfire in southwestern New Mexico that has destroyed a dozen cabins and spread smoke across the state, prompting holiday weekend air-quality warnings.

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres or more than 130 square miles.

The heavy smoke apparently disoriented six hikers Friday, prompting the New Mexico National Guard to carry out a rescue.

Col. Michael Montoya said one of them had an injured knee and had to be taken to safety by ambulance. The others were able to walk to a secure area.

More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze that resulted from the merger earlier this week of two lightning-sparked fires. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds.

The blaze has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon was placed under a voluntary evacuation order.

The strong winds pushed ash from the blaze 35 to 40 miles away, while smoke from the giant fire spread across the state and into Arizona. The haze blocked views of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, and a smell of smoke permeated the air throughout northern New Mexico.

Health officials as far away as Albuquerque and Santa Fe issued alerts for the holiday weekend, advising people to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed.

They said the effects on most people would be minor but noted mild throat and eye irritation or allergy-like symptoms could be expected. Officials warned people with heart and lung conditions to be especially diligent in minimizing their exposure to the smoky air.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, officials said heavy air tankers and thousands of firefighters were on standby Friday as fire managers kept a close watch on high winds and hot temperatures at the start of Memorial Day weekend. Fire danger remains high in the southern Colorado foothills and the South Park area.

Two heavy air tankers have been taken to Grand Junction in western Colorado, where the fire danger is highest, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Steve Segin said.

"We've got the resources. We've got the firefighters," Segin said. "We're ready."

The National Weather Service said wind gusts could reach 70 mph Saturday in some western Colorado valleys, with sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph. Most of eastern Colorado also was under a high-wind watch, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph possible Saturday.

In Southern California, firefighters worked to corral a wildfire that has chewed through 3,100 acres of tinder-dry grass and light brush since it broke out Thursday afternoon east of Julian.

On Friday, the fire forced about 50 people to evacuate an RV park in San Diego County. It earlier prompted the evacuation of about 100 homes in the Shelter Valley area, but residents were allowed to return late Thursday.

The fire was 20 percent contained, said Nick Schuler, battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.

In Arizona, residents of the historic mining town of Crown King were allowed to return home after being evacuated because of a wildfire about 85 miles north of Phoenix. The fire started May 13 and has burned more than 16,000 acres. It is 35 percent contained, fire officials said.

In Nevada, questions were being raised over fire crews' initial response to a backyard burn that rekindled two days later, destroying two homes in a rural community and scorching 7,500 acres.

A 911 recording obtained by The Associated Press showed a resident called Sunday to report that a neighbor's permitted burn in the Topaz Ranch Estates was out of control. Volunteer firefighters with the East Fork Fire Protection District arrived at the scene and then left, apparently without extinguishing the blaze.

Gusty winds rekindled the fire Tuesday, and it spread quickly through thick brush and dry grasses. Two homes and 17 outbuildings were destroyed.

District Fire Chief Tod Carlini did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Friday.

The brand new 11-hole golf course in Kharghar, ready since February, will have to wait well until after the monsoon to be inaugurated, thanks to Cidco?s insistence that the CM do the honours. In the last four months, unavailability of dates from the chief minister has led Cidco officials to skip several occasions marked for the inauguration. Now, the problem is the model code of conduct imposed in Raigad prior to local body elections.

The code is in force till the end of this month. When that ends, the monsoon will play spoiler for the next three-four months. Officials say they will need a month thereafter to trim the lawn. As such, November is the month tentatively scheduled for the opening. As per Cidco?s targets, the golf course was supposed to rake in over Rs 1 crore in six months through commercial use by the public and international matches. But as long as it lies unused, the target will not be met.

?We had plans of making over Rs 1 crore in six months from the course, where people will be allowed to play golf at nominal cost. We are likely to lose this income now as the unveiling is not likely to happen before November,? said a senior Cidco official requesting anonymity. More concrete losses have accrued to Cidco in the form of monthly maintenance expenses of around Rs 10 lakh for the past four months.

?We completed the construction in February and have since been incurring expenses of around Rs 10 lakh every month for maintenance of the course. If the inauguration does not happen in the next few days, grass will grow rank on the course due to the rains. We will then have to chop it, level the course using earthmoving machines, and do much more,? said Ramesh Giri, executive engineer, Cidco.

Cidco is still sticking firm to its decision of getting the CM for the inauguration. Mohan Ninawe, public relations officer, Cidco, said, ?Due to the code of conduct in Raigad, we are not able to get the CM for the inauguration. We will seek his availability once the code of conduct gets over. The opening ceremony will only be at the hands of the CM, and it is very difficult to say when that will be possible. Until then, the course will not be made operational.?

Long overdue
The work on the golf course in Kharghar started in January 2008 and was supposed to be completed by February 2010. But delay in getting clearances cost the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (Cidco) two more years to complete the course. The body has attempted to get the CM for its inauguration at least three times till now. Officially, the ceremony was announced for March 24, then April 26, but was cancelled both times. Initially, the course was supposed to be constructed with 18 holes at a cost of Rs 52 crore. But Cidco did not get permission from the forest department for using its land to construct seven holes, and went on to build an 11-hole course at Rs 38 crore.

I started with a sore throat that day I had a fever and started taking Dipyrone and sucking lozenges. The fever passed. 3 days after a lot of sore throat went to the doctor who said I was Amidaglite. I took an injection Bezetacil and started taking an anti-inflationary called Nisulid. This day was great! Passing one day (today) started to get tingling sensations throughout the body, not given much importance. however hours ago I started having headaches and coughing !!!!! (no more sore throat)

The task of blending families is daunting. A step-family is not the same as a biological family. It can be one of the most difficult maneuvers, even for otherwise successful parents and productive members of society. Different personal and family histories create expectations that seem impossible to adjust. What makes a marriage work does not make a step-family work. Parents renew their dream of family life, which is often not shared by the children. And then, there are the other members of the family ? the ex-spouses, or in other words, co-parents.

E. Mavis Heatherington reveals in her research documented in her book For Better or For Worse: Divorce Reconsidered, that is takes five to seven years of step-family tension to match the stress levels that of a husband and wife in a first marriage. Patricia Papernow agrees, saying that it takes a step-family an average of seven years to experience authenticity and intimacy. James Bray in his research found that a loving well-functioning step-family does not act or think like a family for two or three years. It can counteract the negative effects of divorce, but it takes time. Meanwhile, protecting time within the biological sub-units of the step-family affirms that the relationships with primary attachments are protected. That is not an indication of family division. Step-parents can?t expect to have the same kind of bond as with their biological children, but a bond can still grow to be strong.

Here are common step-family myths:

• Love between family members will happen quickly.
• We will do it better this time around.
• Our children share our family dreams.
• Our family and parenting styles will blend well.

Actually most step-families will not be successful, with a 60 to 65 divorce rate. The chance of divorce when step-children are involved is 50 percent higher than remarriages without step-children. Making the marriage work is top priority. Parents may feel guilty that their kids had to suffer through a divorce, and may undermine their second marriage to cater to the kids. This extreme can be avoided along with the other extreme of expecting the step-family to be the same as a biological family. Parents need to confront each other behind closed doors, and never criticize a parent in front of the kids. The marriage, which may be one of the most vulnerable relationships in the step-family, needs to be protected and not in competition with the biological children. There is enough love and reassurance to go around for both relationships.

Co-parents that keep their kids out of conflict greatly increase the chance of the children?s successful adjustment. Signs of cooperation between the parents are healing for the kids. Ron Deal, in his book The Smart Step-Family, compares the two homes of divorced parents to two countries with different customs and expectations. Imagine how hard it is for kids to adjust, and then imagine these two countries going to war. Every transition would be?a move into enemy territory.

Giving the blended family to develop is crucial. Most tension is the result of pressure or expectations that are unrealistic or premature. Guard the marriage, a fragile relationship in a blended family, and the relationship with the biological children, a bond that needs to be respected. Take time and build a new relationship with the step-kids. When you first starting dating your new spouse, you took your time before you started acting like a spouse with the expectations of a spouse. Even though you may be living with your step-kids, take your time before acting like a parent with the expectations of a parent. From a child?s point of view, the starting point of the relationship is when we live together, not the courtship. Biological parents and children have an attachment bond that is strong even before the kids can talk, and it has been strengthened over the years as the child has positive experiences or even wishes he or she has positive experiences with his or her mom and dad. In this context, the negativity from discipline is much better tolerated. As trust develops, so will one?s influence.

We've long known more than a few Facebook users don't trust the social network to keep their personal information private. We know this because each and every time a?new Facebook privacy kerfuffle hits the news, that's all we talk about in our status updates ... on Facebook. You know, that social network we don't trust with our information. Now,?a new AP-CNBC poll?has the statistics to support our long-held supposition.

Sixty percent of the 1,004 polled by AP-CNBC had a Facebook account ? even though more than half of the respondents also said?they "have little or no faith in the company to protect their privacy," according to the poll, some details of which were shared Tuesday?in msnbc.com's Business section.

Perhaps you think the lion's share of distrust belongs to those respondents who who don't use Facebook ? after all,?they made up 40 percent of the?people polled. However,?only 21 percent of non-Facebook users claimed privacy concerns as their reason for not joining the social network.?And another 21 percent of the non-Facebook users said they "dislike it," perhaps for privacy reasons.

So it breaks down like this: A large number of people who ? voluntarily ??put their personal information on Facebook claim that they do not trust the social network with their personal information. In fact, they trust Facebook?a whole lot less than people who avoid it altogether. ?Maybe Facebook would worry about it's upcoming IPO if 59 percent of U.S. users quit the social network out of mistrust, but as the numbers reveal, nobody's going anywhere.?

Here's what we're talking about:?

A majority of Americans say they have a Facebook page (56 percent), up from 48 percent in a Gallup/USA Today poll last fall.

• About 3 in 10 say they use Facebook every day.
• Younger adults are the heaviest users, with a third (32 percent) of those under age 35 saying they visit Facebook several times a day. Most in this age group (55 percent) report using Facebook daily.
• Among senior citizens, 73 percent do not have a Facebook page, and 47 percent of baby boomers say they don?t have one.

Very few people who use Facebook say they trust the site with their personal information.

• Just 13 percent say they trust Facebook completely or a lot to keep their personal information private.
• A large majority (59 percent) say they have little or no faith in the company to protect their privacy.

Among those who do not have a Facebook page, 35 percent said they simply lack interest in it, preferring to spend their time on other activities.

• Twenty-two percent avoid it because they think it?s a bad thing, inappropriate, or not for people their age.
• Another 21 percent said they are not on Facebook because of computer issues; the same percentage of people opt out due to privacy concerns.
• Demographic breakdowns of those who do not use Facebook are very similar to the results to those who have Facebook accounts.

So why are we still on Facebook if we don't trust it? Overt?maladaptive?narcissism? Versions of that delightful old chestnut populate much of the comments on?msnbc.com's?Market Day report on Facebook's public offering (the largest Internet deal in history, in case you somehow missed it.)

"Facebook is a testament to the inflated human ego," wrote one such commenter. "Yes I had an account and instead of network with friends I was blasted with endless idiotic posts about where people are having dinner. Every picture of their children ever taken and personal 'moonbeam' beliefs. Now I don't want to talk to a majority of people I once considered friends."

And according to another,?"Facebook is absolutely the most useless space on the Internet. The fact that anything so ridiculous will be valued at billions of dollars shows how pathetic this society is rapidly becoming."

Hey, I'm as much a?misanthrope?as the next?hermit, but I've seen enough to know we all don't fit the narcissistic personality disorder diagnosis.?In a Red Tape Chronicles report on the?social media divide,?Alessandro Acquisti, an economist who studies privacy at Carnegie-Mellon University, told Bob Sullivan, "The privacy issue may be polarizing because the penalty for avoiding social networks is becoming more severe over time."

Acquisti continued:?"Not having a mobile phone now would dramatically cut you off from professional and personal life opportunities.?It's the same story with social networks."

We all are inevitably locked in, he says.?"The more people use them for socializing and for their professional life, the more costly it becomes for others (who aren't members) to be loyal to their views."

One msnbc.com?commenter weighed the cost and benefits, and like many, found it worthwhile. "I live in Europe, and my family is in the U.S., all over in fact. Not to mention the friends I have around the world. It is much easier for everyone who is important to me to be on one site, where I share information ONCE and its done. I am happy many of you seem to have so much time (and money) to individually email or call or visit all the people you care about in your life, but many of us don't."

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? Tall, waving corn fields that line Midwestern roads may one day be replaced by dwarfed versions that require less water, fertilizer and other inputs, thanks to a fungicide commonly used on golf courses.

Burkhard Schulz, a Purdue University assistant professor of plant biochemical and molecular genetics, had earlier found that knocking out the steroid function in corn plants would create tiny versions that only had female sex characteristics. But brassinazole, the chemical used to inhibit the plant steroid biosynthesis, was prohibitively expensive.

One gram of brassinazole could cost as much as $25,000, so Schulz started looking into other options. He found that propiconazole, used to treat fungal dollar spot disease on golf courses, is more potent and costs about 10 cents for the same amount.

"Any research where you needed to treat large plants for long periods of time would have been impossible," Schulz said. "Those tests before would have cost us millions of dollars. Now, they cost us $25. This will open up research in crops that was not possible before."

Schulz's earlier work showed that inhibiting steroids in maize produced short, feminized versions of the plants that developed more kernels where pollen would normally grow. Those findings came from adding chemicals and altering genes to disrupt steroid production. His new finding shows that a widely available fungicide can do the same thing.

"We can change the architecture of a plant the same way that has been done through breeding," said Schulz, whose findings were published in the journal PLoS One. "We can treat plants with this substance throughout the plant's life and it will never be able to produce steroids."

That could be significant for seed producers, who must mechanically remove tassels, the male portion of the plants, so that they do not pollinate themselves. The process is labor-intensive.

Shorter plants that produce the same amount of grain could also reduce agriculture's environmental footprint. Those plants would need much less water, fertilizer and pesticides. Schulz said wider application on golf courses could also slow grass growth, minimizing the amount of mowing that would have to be done.

"This could significantly reduce costs for golf courses," he said. "If you could eliminate one cutting per week even, it would be considerable because there are so many golf courses."

Schulz said propiconazole is recognized as a safe chemical for humans.

"They treat golf courses with it. People are around it every day," he said.

Schulz plans to test other grain crops to see if propiconazole would retard steroid production in those plants, or whether the effect is specific to maize. He is also determining which genes the fungicide affects. The research project is a collaboration between Schulz's Purdue team and researchers at Seoul National University in South Korea.
