Host Web Pages on Google Drive

Host Web Pages on Google DriveGoogle has added a new feature to Drive: You can now serve up web content from within your Google Drive folder, even ones that run JavaScript. All you need to do is upload your HTML files and assets (e.g., images) and make them public.

The Google Developers site has more details on publishing a folder as a website, but essentially, besides having the folder and site assets public, you also need to link to the files in the folder using a "webViewLink" code. If you don't have an index.html file in the folder, Drive will display a list of the folder's contents.

This could come in really handy if you don't want to spring for your own web hosting. You could do things like publish a photo gallery, an online resume, or a personal start page. There's no word on bandwidth or other limitations yet, but you can keep an eye on the discussions on Stack Overflow if you have any questions.

Sutter agrees to donate Warrack Hospital campus to youth services ...

SANTA ROSA ? Social Advocates for Youth announced that Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa has offered the Warrack Hospital campus as a donation, a development that would allow the nonprofit to increase its capacity nearly five-fold while adding a number of new services.

Should the the nonprofit ? better known as SAY ? finalize critical details of the proposal, it would then begin to raise funds from grants, government sources and community donations to establish a ?Youth Opportunity Center.? It would aim to provide youth in Sonoma County with a host of services ranging from counseling, employment and job skills training, transitional housing for former foster children, emergency shelter and other community programs.

It?s too soon to say exactly how much money will need to be raised, pending the completion cost estimates for renovations by Santa Rosa-based Wright Contracting, said Matt Martin, executive director of SAY. Additionally, the nonprofit is currently evaluating any potential increase to its operating budget, which in 2011 was $3.2 million, to support new programs.

?We are honored (Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa) wants to support SAY?s efforts to reach more of Sonoma County?s youth and children in crisis with our services and programs,? Mr. Martin said in announcing the planned donation, adding that it ?would be a great start in bringing our dream of establishing a center where, for generations to come, teens and vulnerable 18-24 year-old ( can heal, grow, and find hope into reality.?

The Warrack campus opened in 1960 as a 69-bed acute-care facility. Sutter Health acquired the hospital, located at Hoen Avenue and Summerfield Road, back in 2001 but de-licensed it in 2006, ending acute care operations ?due to lack of community need.?

The campus since then has been used for a number of other services, including its workforce health offices and certain labs, but Sutter has long been looking for a better fit for the building. Only 25 percent of the campus was occupied.

?We learned of SAY?s vision to create a Sonoma County Youth Opportunity Center and knew this was the right fit and best use for the building?s unique configuration,? Mike Purvis, chief administration officer of Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, said in a statement.? ?(Sutter) offered to donate the building to SAY to preserve the location?s community service legacy.?

If the plans go forward, SAY would relocate from its existing 11,000-square-foot offices on Airway Drive in Santa Rosa to the Warrack Campus, where it would occupy roughly 52,000 square feet. Two programs run by SAY, the Dr. James E. Coffee House Teen Shelter and Tomayo Village, would remain in their current locations. The nonprofit anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.? Upon successful completion of that inspection, Sutter intends on remaining and would the east wing of the hospital back from SAY.

The nonprofit would also likely boost staffing levels, but an immediate number is not yet known, Mr. Martin said.?

In August, SAY?s Board of Directors? entered into a 180-day due diligence period with Sutter to investigate the condition of the building and identify all costs associated with remodeling the interior.

?SAY is evaluating our capacity to operate current programs while expanding into the Warrack Campus with the Youth Opportunity Center and including other nonprofits that provide complimentary services to children and youth,? said John Meislahn, SAY board president. SAY anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.

According to SAY, several local Sonoma County building industry leaders have donated their time to assist SAY in evaluating the facility, including Mark Davis of Wright Contracting, Jim Henderson Architect, Project Development Manager Bert Bangsberg, Don Watanabe, former Burbank Housing Project Manager, Steve Worthen of Interiors Inc., Civil Engineer Leroy Carlenzoli, and Zyromski-Konicek.

SAY was founded in 1971 and provides a variety of services including low-cost counseling, job training, educational support, emergency services, transitional housing and youth employment to former foster children and children age 5-24 and their families. It has 54 full-time employees and about 250 volunteers. About 78 percent of its operating budget comes from grants and another 18 percent from donations.

The Youth Opportunity Center could have significant impact on those in crisis, should the plans come to fruition, officials said.

?If we can come together, raise the funds needed and make this dream of a Youth Oppurtunity Center happen, we will change the future for hundreds of Sonoma County youth every year,? said Bill Friedman, SAY honorary board member.

With its vast wilderness, Alaska provides opportunities for viewing wildlife either up close or from far away, in its natural habitat. For example, Alaska holds the distinction of having the largest Eagle population in the world. Whether you are a nature lover or not, just seeeing these magnificent birds soar throught the air is enough to take your breath away. With a wilderness area that is 2 1/2 times the size of the state of Texas, you can be guaranteed excellent photo opportunities.
It?s hard to believe that Alaska has the largest temperate rain forest in the United States. Take the time to walk in it and discover this incredible gift. Indescribable adventures await you whereever your journey takes you in Alaska. Every ?ice-blue? glacier and historic waterfront town calls for you to jump in to explore and discover its uniqueness and beauty. Give yourself the freedom to answer this ?call of the wild?. In every city from Anchorage to Fairbanks and beyond, there?s plenty to do and see.
One of the ways to see this beautiful state is to cruise the Inner Passage. Taking one of the cruise ships is a simple way to get your feet wet and explore the state. You have the security of knowing that your basic needs like food, transportation, and your lodging is handled while you have the freedom of choosing any number of activities.
Depending on the town you stop in, you can choose to go whale watching, or take a helicopter trip and walk on a glacier. You can ride the White Pass Railroad or pan for gold. You can even take a Jeep tour on a logging trail and top it off with a salmon bake. Also, every town appears to have their own special and historical events happening on a regular basis and you definitely want to catch these, as well. There are also many fascinating museums and remember to save time to see the stunning Aurora Borealis, especially if you go in the fall.
Alaska seems to have it all. From world famous Parks & Preserves to Volcanos. From Historical & Annual Events and everything in between. With such variety, it?s surprising that anyone would look anywhere but north when vacation time comes. Alaska is a great American Vacation destination that you will want to experience for yourself at least once in your lifetime./>/>/>/>/>/>

The French R?sistance has had a great influence on literature, particularly in FranceA famous example is the poem "Strophes pour se souvenir", which was written by the communist academic Louis Aragon in 1955 to commemorate the heroism of the Manouchian Group, whose 23 members were shot by the NazisThe R?sistance is also portrayed in Jean Renoir's wartime This Land is Mine (1943), which was produced in the USAIn the immediate post-war years, French cinema produced a number of films that portrayed a France broadly present in the R?sistance.[188][189] The 1946 La Bataille du rail depicted the courageous efforts of French railway workers to sabotage German reinforcement trains,[190] and in the same year Le P?re tranquille told the story of a quiet insurance agent secretly involved in the bombing of a factory.[190] Collaborators were hatefully presented as a rare minority, as played by Pierre Brewer in J?richo (1946) or Serge Reggiani in Les Portes de la nuit (1946), and movements such as the Milice were rarely evokedIn the 1950s, a less heroic interpretation of the R?sistance to the occupation gradually began to emerge.[190] In Claude Autant-Lara's La Travers?e de Paris (1956), the portrayal of the city's black market and general mediocrity revealed the reality of war-profiteering during the occupation.[191] In the same year, Robert Bresson presented A Man Escaped, in which an imprisoned R?sistance activist works with a reformed collaborator inmate to escape.[192] A ...

Wild coyotes 'kind of chilling' by Wrigley Field

CHICAGO (AP) ? Wild baseball fans may be a standard sight at Wrigley Field, but a pair of wild coyotes milling around Chicago's historic ballpark ? surrounded on all sides by bars, restaurants and busy streets ? was not what one photographer was expecting on a busy Friday night.

So he quickly grabbed his camera.

"They were just kind of chilling," freelance photographer Will Byington said. "They were hanging out and not even doing much. They were kind of just checking out the scene on a Friday night in Wrigleyville. It was like they were on a date, taking a stroll."

Byington said he was shooting a concert at a bar across the street from the stadium in the Wrigleyville neighborhood, notoriously crowded and often rowdy on weekend nights, when he saw the two coyotes hanging out by the statute of former Chicago Cubs player Ernie Banks, near the ticketing area.

"It was kind of like they were looking for tickets," the 34-year-old Chicago resident laughed. "They went by the ticket window and unfortunately found it was closed, so they were ready to move onto the bar."

Wildlife ecologist Stanley Gehrt, who has extensively studied coyotes living in and around Chicago, said coyotes have been in the area for the past decade. He said the latest data shows there are at least 2,000 coyotes in Cook County, where Chicago is located.

"That's their territory. They live there," Gehrt, who works at Ohio State University, said of the unusual pair, which he said were born and raised in the city and likely live in Wrigleyville.

Byington had just a few minutes to snap his nighttime photos before the animals moved on. But he said the coyotes appeared unfazed by the honking horns and packed sidewalks. One even stepped onto a street as cabs and cars crawled by in traffic as if the coyote was "trying to figure out, do they want to eat? Or do they want to get a drink?" he said.

Byington didn't think much of his photos until he posted them online. But they started gathering attention after getting picked up on Facebook by the Cubby Bear bar where he had been working that night.

Chicago Cubs fan Dan Michaels reasons that the coyotes were likely fellow fans of the lackluster team and simply mixed up their calendars.

"My personal theory is they don't know that the Cubs play in summer," he said Wednesday as he walked by the stadium. "They picked the wrong season to wait out by the game."

'Moonrise,' 'Silver Linings' lead Spirit Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The oddball romances "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Silver Linings Playbook" picked up five nominations each Tuesday to lead the Spirit Awards honoring independent film.

Both films are competing for the best-picture prize at the Spirit Awards, one of Hollywood's first big announcements on the long road to the Oscars.

Also competing for best picture are the father-daughter tale "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; the black comedy "Bernie"; and the gay drama "Keep the Lights On."

"Silver Linings Playbook," a comic drama centered on a man just released from a mental hospital and a troubled young widow, earned lead-acting nominations for Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. "Moonrise Kingdom," a first-love story between a precocious boy and girl who run away together, received a supporting-actor nomination for Bruce Willis.

The films each earned directing and screenplay slots for "Moonrise Kingdom" filmmaker Wes Anderson, who co-wrote the script with Roman Coppola, and "Silver Linings Playbook" filmmaker David O. Russell. "Moonrise Kingdom" also was nominated for cinematography.

Matthew McConaughey received two nominations, for best actor in "Killer Joe" and supporting actor in "Magic Mike." Past Academy Award winner Helen Hunt has a supporting-actress nomination for "The Sessions." Child star Quvenzhane Wallis, who had never acted before, has a best-actress nomination for "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Among other acting nominees are Jack Black (best actor for "Bernie"); John Hawkes (best actor for "The Sessions"); Rosemarie DeWitt (supporting actress for "Your Sister's Sister"); Michael Pena (supporting actor for "End of Watch"); Sam Rockwell (supporting actor for "Seven Psychopaths"); and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (best actress for "Smashed").

Joining Anderson and Russell in the directing category are Julia Loktev for "The Loneliest Planet," Ira Sachs for "Keep the Lights On" and Benh Zeitlin for "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won the top prize at last January's Sundance Film Festival.

Though the Spirit Awards honor lower-budgeted film outside the Hollywood mainstream, the nominations often overlap heavily with Oscar contenders. Last season's big Oscar winner, "The Artist," also won the top prize at the Spirit Awards, while films such as "The Descendants," ''Beginners" and "My Week with Marilyn" had wins or nominations at both shows.

The overlap may be lighter this season, with big-budget studio films such as "Les Miserables," ''Lincoln" and "Argo" shaping up as early favorites to dominate the Oscars, whose nominations come out Jan. 10.

But "Silver Linings Playbook," ''Moonrise Kingdom," ''Beasts of the Southern Wild," ''The Sessions" and other smaller films have solid prospects in some Oscar categories.

Presented by the cinema group Film Independent, the Spirit Awards will be handed out at an afternoon ceremony along the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., on Feb. 23, the day before the Oscars. The Spirit Awards show will air that night on IFC.

Nominees are chosen by panels of film professionals, which gauge contenders on such criteria as uniqueness of vision; original, provocative subject matter; how economically they were produced; and percentage of financing from independent, non-Hollywood sources. Eligible films typically range from tiny-budgeted movies shot for $500,000 or less to productions that cost as much as $20 million.

Members of Film Independent, including filmmakers and movie fans, are eligible to vote on the winners.

iPhone and iPad once again lead web usage metrics, this time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales

iPhone and iPad once again lead web usage metrics, this time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales

Continuing the confusing trend of Android dominating in market share but iOS continuing to lead -- by huge margin -- in mobile web usage share, both Apple's iPhone and the iPad reportedly eclipsed Google's Android in Thanksgiving and Black Friday online shopping use over the last few days. This according to IBM Digital Analytics Benchmarks:

Mobile Shopping: Mobile purchases soared with 24 percent of consumers using a mobile device to visit a retailer's site, up from 14.3 percent in 2011. Mobile sales exceeded 16 percent, up from 9.8 percent in 2011.

The iPad Factor: The iPad generated more traffic than any other tablet or smartphone, reaching nearly 10 percent of online shopping. This was followed by iPhone at 8.7 percent and Android 5.5 percent. The iPad dominated tablet traffic at 88.3 percent followed by the Barnes and Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent.

We've seen this again and again, iOS web usage reports that dwarf the competition. Tablets, of course, are understandable. Apple is the market leader. The iPhone, however, while often the best selling phone in many markets, doesn't outsell all other phones -- or all Android phones -- combined in the market.

So what explains the discrepancy? Do people upgrading from feature phones to a cheap or big screen Android simply keep using it as a feature phone and not bother with things like web browsers? Is the web browsing experience on Android somehow less discoverable or enjoyable? Do expert users simply not care to use the web?

None of those explanations make sense. Chrome on Android is easy to find and easy to use. So why aren't Android users using it?

Maybe that's the wrong question. Maybe the right question is why are iPhone and iPad users using the web so much? What is it about Apple's products that make using the web so much more discoverable and enjoyable?

Egypt's political foes dig in their heels

(AP) ? Supporters and opponents of Egypt's president on Sunday grew more entrenched in their potentially destabilizing battle over the Islamist leader's move to assume near absolute powers, with neither side appearing willing to back down as the stock market plunged amid the fresh turmoil.

The standoff poses one of the hardest tests for the nation's liberal and secular opposition since Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago. Failure to sustain protests and eventually force Mohammed Morsi to loosen control could consign it to long-term irrelevance.

Clashes between the two sides spilled onto the streets for a third day since the president issued edicts that make him immune to oversight of any kind, including that of the courts.

A teenager was killed and at least 40 people were wounded when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the president's Muslim Brotherhood in the Nile Delta city of Damanhoor, according to security officials.

It was the first reported death from the street battles that erupted across much of the nation on Friday, the day after Morsi's decrees were announced. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, identified the boy as 15-year-old Islam Hamdi Abdel-Maqsood.

The tensions also dealt a fresh blow to the economy, which has suffered due to the problems plaguing the Arab world's most populous nation since Mubarak's ouster.

Egypt's benchmark EGX30 stock index dropped 9.59 percentage points Sunday in the first trading session since Morsi issued his decrees. The losses were among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks immediately after Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising last year. The loss in the value of shares was estimated at close to $5 billion.

The judiciary, the main target of the edicts, has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and other cities on Sunday.

But the nation's highest judicial body, the Supreme Judiciary Council, watered down its opposition to the decrees on Sunday. It told judges and prosecutors to return to work and announced that its members would meet with Morsi on Monday to try to persuade him to restrict immunity to major state decisions like declaring war or martial law or breaking diplomatic relations with foreign nations.

Morsi supporters insist that the measures were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Both the parliament and the constitutional assembly are dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

Opposition activists, however, have been adamant since the crisis first erupted that they would not enter a dialogue with Morsi's regime before the decrees are rescinded.

Protesters also clashed with police at Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the mass protests that toppled Mubarak, and in the side streets and avenues leading off the plaza. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, said 267 protesters have been arrested and 164 policemen injured since the unrest began a week ago, initially to mark the anniversary of street protests a year ago against the nation's then-military rulers. Forty-two protesters were killed in those demonstrations.

The ministry did not say how many protesters were injured in the latest clashes in Tahrir, but security officials put the figure at 260.

Hundreds of protesters staging a sit-in in Tahrir have vowed not to leave before Morsi rescinds his decrees. The two sides also have called for massive rival protests Tuesday in Cairo, signaling a protracted struggle.

Morsi's office issued an English-language statement late Sunday defending his decrees and repeating the argument he used when addressing supporters Friday outside his Cairo palace ? that they were designed to bolster the country's transition to democratic rule and dismantle Mubarak's old regime.

"The presidency reiterates the temporary nature of the said measures, which are not meant to concentrate powers," it said. The statement also pledged Morsi's commitment to engaging all political forces on the drafting of a new constitution. Secular and Christian members withdrew from the panel drafting the document, alleging that the Islamists who dominate the body have hijacked the process to produce a charter with an Islamist slant.

Nader Omran, of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party, said any changes to the decrees were "out of the question" but Morsi might "make pledges, vows or addendums explaining his position to clarify the decrees."

He said Morsi would hand over his legislative powers to parliament's upper chamber once a new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and ahead of parliamentary elections. The presidency did not confirm the claim, but doing so would leave the Egyptian leader with the state's executive and legislative powers until around April.

The move also has caused some internal discord among the Morsi camp, with one aide, Samer Marqous, already resigning to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

Another Morsi adviser Ayman al-Sayyad wrote on his Twitter account that the president met Sunday for the second time in as many days with his 17-member advisory council and three of his assistants.

"I think it (the meeting) produced a genuine realization of the gravity of the situation ... We were candid today in our meeting with the president and we now expect practical steps on the ground." He did not elaborate.

Leading Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Laureate and a former director of the U.S. nuclear agency, warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless Morsi rescinds his new powers.

Egypt's liberal and secular groups ? long divided, weakened and uncertain as Islamist parties rose to power in the months after the revolution ? are seeking to rally in response to the decrees as the stakes are high. The fractured opposition came together as the engine of the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak to step down after 29 years in power, bringing millions out on the streets, but they have failed to recapture that energy after months of setbacks.

Morsi, meanwhile, already has backed down twice in high-profile battles with the judiciary in the five months he's been in office. The U.S.-trained engineer failed to challenge the court ruling dissolving parliament's powerful lower chamber and had to rescind his decision to fire the country's attorney-general, Mubarak-era appointee Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud, in October. He fired him on Thursday as part of his edicts.

Maryland leaving ACC to join Big Ten in 2014

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) ? Choosing to look toward the future rather than honor the past, Maryland joined the Big Ten on Monday, bolting from the Atlantic Coast Conference in a move driven by the school's budget woes.

Maryland was a charter member of the ACC, which was founded in 1953. Tradition and history, however, were not as important to school President Wallace D. Loh as the opportunity to be linked with the prosperous Big Ten.

"By being a member of the Big Ten Conference, we are able to ensure financially stability for Maryland athletics for decades to come," Loh said, speaking at a news conference with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and Athletic Director Kevin Anderson.

Loh and other school officials involved in the decision decided that the potential money to be made in the Big Ten was more significant than the $50 million exit fee and the tradition associated with belonging to the same conference for 59 years.

"I am very aware that for many of our Terps fans and alumni, their reaction is stunned and disappointed. But we will always cherish the memories, the rivalries, the tradition of the ACC," Loh said. "For those alumni and Terp fans, I will now say this: I made this decision as best as I could ... to do what is best for the University of Maryland for the long haul."

Maryland eliminated seven sports programs earlier this year, and Loh said the shift to the Big Ten could provide enough of a windfall to restore some of those sports.

Delany said Maryland's entry was approved unanimously by the conference's 12 presidents.

"Quite honestly, they were giddy," Delany said. "Maybe some people Fear the Turtle. We embrace the Turtle."

Maryland will become the southernmost member of the Big Ten member starting, in July 2014. Rutgers is expected follow suit by Tuesday, splitting from the Big East and making it an even 14 schools in the Big Ten, though Delany would not confirm that.

But he had no problem explaining why the Big Ten would be interested in stretching its boundaries from the Midwest.

"We realize that all of the major conferences are slightly outside of their footprint," Delany said. "We believe that the association is one that will benefit both of us."

For Maryland, the move was not entirely based on athletics. Maryland will join the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of world-class research institutions.

"For me and for the board and for the faculty and for the students, the academic component is very, very important," Loh said. "I would not have made this kind of deal if it was a conference that did not have this consortium."

But money was really the driving force.

"Somebody has to pay the bills," Loh said. "I want to leave a legacy for decade to come, long after I'm gone, that no president is going to wonder if Maryland athletics as we know it is going to survive."

Besides, Loh noted, the ACC isn't exactly the cozy little group it was 59 years ago. Notre Dame was recently added to the conference, though it will remain a football independent and play five games against ACC teams.

"The world of the ACC as we have known it has changed, and the job of the president is not just to look at the past and the present, but to look to the future," Loh said.

Loh said the discussions between Maryland and the Big Ten gathered steam two weeks ago. On Saturday, it became clear the discussions were serious.

"Space is not the divide that it was once upon a time," Delany said.

Maryland gives the Big Ten a presence in the major media market of Washington. D.C. Rutgers, in New Brunswick, N.J., and about 40 miles south of New York City, puts the Big Ten in the country's largest media market, and most heavily populated area.

Delany said demographics were a huge part of this decision. The population is not growing as quickly in the Big Ten's current Midwestern footprint as it is in other areas of the country, and it has hampered the Big Ten's ability to recruit, especially in football, its signature sport. The Big Ten felt it needed to change that.

"We think demographics have fueled our growth the last 100 years," Delany told the AP in an interview before the news conference. "...What we're doing is not creating a new paradigm, we're responding to a new paradigm but for very kind of historic reasons. We understand that success requires a dynamic involvement with rich demographics."

For both schools, the move should come with long-term financial gain. The Big Ten reportedly paid its members $24.6 million in shared television and media rights revenues this year.

There will be some financial matters to resolve in the short term though. After the ACC added Notre Dame as a member in all sports but football and hockey in September, the league voted to raise the exit fee to $50 million. Maryland was one of two schools that voted against the increased exit fee.

Loh believes the potential financial gain of this deal will more than offset the sum.

"I say we have an arrangement within our membership that will assure the future of Maryland athletics for decades to come," he said. "As we crunched those numbers, we are able to deal with this issue."

The Big East's exit fee is $10 million, but the league also requires a 27-month notification period for departing members. That means Rutgers will not be able to join the Big Ten until 2015 without working out some kind of deal with the Big East.

Syracuse, Pittsburgh and West Virginia have all negotiated early withdrawals from the Big East in the past year.

The ACC could now be in the market for another member and it would not be surprising if it looks to the Big East, yet again. Connecticut would seem a perfect fit after Pitt and Syracuse join next season.

The Big Ten added Nebraska in 2010 to go to 12 members, and Delany had given every indication that the conference was happy to stay at that number. The conference had given no indication it was in the expansion market, and not until the last few days did it come to light, surprising many in intercollegiate athletics.

The question now is whether this sparks more realignment from conferences that weren't even affected.

For now, though, Maryland is the latest school to forsake tradition for a financial windfall. The Terps have mostly been a middling football program for several decades, but Anderson is certain that the additional money will help.

"We believe that with recruiting, and the continued improvement of the team, we will take on the Big Ten and be very competitive," Anderson said.

Political Animal - Rolling Jubilee: a distraction, or a way forward?

November 18, 2012 4:37 PM Rolling Jubilee: a distraction, or a way forward?

By Kathleen Geier

One of the offshoots of the Occupy movement is an intriguing project known as Rolling Jubilee. Billing itself as ?a bailout of the people by the people,? Rolling Jubilee is an organization that raises money to buy the debt of random individuals for pennies on the dollar, thus wiping out the debt and freeing them from the harassment of bill collectors. They plan to start by buying medical debt and to branch out to other forms of debt (credit card, etc.) later. When the debt is forgiven, the debtor is informed of this by a letter, which explains what the Rolling Jubilee is and is accompanied by a copy of Occupy?s Debt Resistor?s Manual.

Like Doug Henwood, I have mixed feelings about this project. Raising awareness about debt is essential, and lending a helping hand to one?s fellow citizens who are being crushed by debt is a noble endeavor. Personal debt, and in particular student debt, is an ever-growing problem in our society and was a powerful motivator for many of the Occupy protesters. But it very much remains to be seen if Rolling Jubilee?s debt relief effort is a promising way to organize a political movement. As a community building exercise, it may prove a bust. The debtors who are being helped out have no organic ties to the movement and may not care to participate in it. Foreclosure activism, which is focused on keeping people in their homes and is community-based, seems much more promising in this regard.

Also, as Henwood points out, there?s the problem that if activists buy enough debt, they risk driving up the price of the debt, by increasing demand. However, it seems unlikely that they will raise enough money to do so, and at any rate the debt-buying is mostly symbolic. The point is not to abolish the debts of everyone in America, but to raise awareness of debt as an issue and to build a movement that brings about public policies that promote debt relief and other fundamental changes in our economic system.

Henwood?s most persuasive critique of the movement is his argument that in its narrow focus to debt, the movement unproductively addresses a mere symptom of our unjust and dysfunctional economic system, while ignoring root causes. He writes:

[T]he StrikeDebt! people have inherited from American populism an obsession with money and finance as the root of all our economic problems, while not paying much attention to the things they connect to in the real world. So, debt is a symptom of crappy wages, unemployment, expensive health care and tuition, and a cheesy welfare state. It?s fine to organize and propagandize around debt as long as you use it as a point of entry into that larger conversation?but the StrikeDebt! people have so far done that more in passing, while fixating instead on a so-called ?debt system.? They say they?ll move on to that, and I hope that?s true.

So do I. I?m a skeptic about the movement?s potential for success, but I wish them well. Debt relief efforts may not necessarily lead to a movement that addresses the economic system as a whole, but it could get the ball rolling toward more humane public policies for our huge national problem of overwhelming personal debt.

Obama gets taste of Thailand at Buddhist temple

BANGKOK (AP) ? Leaving behind chants of "Obama, Obama" by adoring crowds on the streets, the president of the United States stepped into the serenity of Thailand's most famous temple compound to marvel at its centerpiece ? a gigantic, golden statue of a reclining Buddha propped up on one elbow before passing into nirvana.

The Temple of Reclining Buddha, formally known as Wat Pho, was the first stop on President Barack Obama's Asian tour that will also take him to Myanmar and Cambodia. Obama arrived at the temple, one of Bangkok's most famous tourist sites, straight from the airport after landing in Bangkok on Sunday. Visits to see the king and the Thai prime minister were saved for later.

Observing traditional custom, Obama took off his shoes as a saffron-robed monk led him and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton through the 18th century temple's stoned paved compound of multi-colored spires and chapels with hundreds of gilded Buddha images.

But the main attraction is the reclining Buddha statue that at 46 meters (150 feet) long, and 15 meters (50 feet) high, stretches half the length of a football field. The statue is made of bricks and plaster and covered in gold leaf with mother-of-pearl inlay decorating the feet.

The visit was meant to give Obama a taste of Bangkok. But one thing Obama did not get to see as he sped through Bangkok was the city's infamous traffic jams. All roads leading to Wat Pho and his other destinations were blocked and cleared of cars as part of security measures that included bomb squads and shutting the temple to the public hours in advance.

Camera-clad tourists who came to visit the temple or glimpse the American leader were initially dismayed. They were kept hundreds of meters (yards) away as his armored Cadillac pulled to a stop inside a white tent erected at the temple's entrance, which obscured him from sight.

But those who waited an hour for his temple tour to end were elated. A smiling Obama waved from the backseat of his car, which drove slowly alongside cheering crowds as he headed to a royal audience with Thailand's revered, ailing monarch, 84-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

"Yes! I saw him! And he was waving at us!" said 72-year-old American tourist Elizabeth Simon visiting Thailand with her 74-year-old sister. They were at the beach in Pattaya two hours away but rushed to Bangkok just to see him. "I'm so thrilled that he won the election. When we heard he was coming, we decided to get here."

Parts of the temple date to Thai King Rama I in the 1700s. The king's ashes are kept beneath the pedestal of one of the huge seated Buddha statues in the complex, which is located along the banks of the Chao Phraya river near the Grand Palace. It is in the quiet, historic old quarter of Bangkok, outside the skyscraper-and-traffic clogged downtown.

"It's meaningful that Obama came straight to Wat Pho," said Pradab Supradit, a 67-year-old Thai grandmother who took a bus, a river ferry and then walked up roads closed for security hoping to glimpse the man or just see his convoy. "It will bring him blessings because temples are at the center of Thai people's hearts."

"I want to see him with my own eyes," she said. "I like Obama because of his charisma and personality. He's a smart guy. I love the way he talks."

BOYS SOCCER: Vikings' Shuey named PSCA Class A Coach of the Year

TOWER CITY - Williams Valley's historic boys' soccer season of titles and awards just keeps on rolling, even after the Vikings played their final game.

This time, and deservedly so, it's an individual honor for the man who oversees it all.

Williams Valley head coach Seth Shuey has been named the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Class A Boys' Coach of the Year. He's just the second Schuylkill League coach to earn the honor, after Halifax's Jeff Kerstetter won the award in 2010.

The honor comes on the heels of a 22-1 season that included the program's first Division II, Schuylkill League and District 11 Class A titles. Williams Valley's lone loss came in the first round of its first-ever appearance in the PIAA Tournament, 6-1 to eventual state champion Mountain View.

"This is the most shocking one yet," Shuey said of the award. "I was floored when I got the phone call. It's an incredible honor and I'm humbled by it."

Shuey was eligible for the award after being nominated as the Schuylkill League representative by fellow coaches. After that, the decision is up to the PSCA committee. The PSCA's decision on the honor was swift and definitive, coming a week before the state title game was even played.

"That's the first thing I asked (PSCA Chairperson Scott Bonagura)," Shuey said. " 'You know the title game still has to be played, right?' I was kinda speechless. I definitely wasn't expecting this one."

The explanation given to Shuey was that regardless of the state final results, the accomplishments of the Vikings' 2012 season earned him the honor.

"This reflects the kids and their hard work," Shuey said. "My assistants, so many people are a part of this - it's not just me."

Shuey then reflected on the past and the long road it took to get to this point.

"I immediately think of my mentor (North Schuylkill head coach) Bob Oravitz," Shuey said. "He's the reason I'm here today as a coach. I learned under him and he gave me my start. This is a special moment we'll be able to share."

Shuey will be honored at the All-State banquet Jan. 26 in Harrisburg, where he will be presented with the award. While Shuey isn't the first Schuylkill League coach to win it, he is the first from District 11.

"If this is a by-product of our season, fine," Shuey said. "What I'm proud of is the way the kids worked this year and turned around a program has been really bad in the past. It's been a great year for this program, and of that, I'm really proud."

The discovery is a first of its kind for Mexico, with mummified canines only previously found in Peru and Egypt.

Experts believe that the dog was domesticated by a local tribe and used in hunting expeditions.

The animal, believed to have been mummified naturally, was found alongside hundreds of human remains, as well as thousands of ancient artifacts including textiles, baskets, and bows and arrows.

Archaeologist Yuri De La Rosa said: 'This is the first mummified canine that has an archaeological context.

'In this case it?s a natural mummification because of the desert and dry conditions. The skin dried to the bones and it was mummified naturally.'

The ancient hound will soon be measured, X-rayed and carbon tested to determine its exact age and breed.?
