Golf-In-form Dutchman Luiten leads Irish Open

June 29 | Sat Jun 29, 2013 5:30pm BST

June 29 (Reuters) - Dutchman Joost Luiten will be chasing his second European tour victory of the month when he takes a one-shot lead into the final round of the Irish Open on Sunday.

The world number 94, who won the Austrian Open three weeks ago, hit a six-under par 66 in the third round on Saturday to lead Spain's Pablo Larrazabal by one shot at Carton House, County Kildare.

Overnight joint-leader Robert Rock is third, three shots behind Luiten, who also finished tied for 10th at the BMW International Open in Munich and 11th at an event in Sweden this month.

"It was good today - a round in this wind with no bogeys is always good," the 27-year-old told the European tour website (www.europeantour.com).

"It looks like I'm playing good, playing consistently. I don't make a lot of silly mistakes, the game feels good."

Luiten made six birdies in his round of 66, a score matched by Larrazabal and England's Rock was steady on his way to a one-under-par 71.

England's Paul Casey, a former world number three and European Ryder Cup player, finished a shot behind Rock after a third-round 67.

A number of leading players, including Northern Ireland's world number two Rory McIlroy, missed the cut just three weeks before the British Open starting at Muirfield, Scotland on July 18. (Reporting by Josh Reich, editing by Ed Osmond)

Judge Issues Gag Order In Trial Of Man Accused Of Writing Chalk ...

As you may have heard, a California man alleged to be a serial graffiti artist faces prison time for scribbling anti-bank messages on the sidewalks outside of three Bank of America branches. The trial began earlier this week and yesterday the judge issued a gag order banning any of the involved parties from speaking to the media ? and admonishing San Diego Mayor Bob Filner for chiming in on the topic.

The judge is also not pleased about the oft-repeated statement that the defendant faces up to 13 years in jail if found guilty. While each of the 13 charges of vandalism could result in a sentence of one year behind bars, the judge stated, ?It?s not going to happen and I would be surprised if it ever happened to any defendant with no criminal record.?

The gag order also came on the same day that the defendant had made a morning radio appearance to talk about his case.

Following the gag order, the defendant did speak briefly to the media, but only to say, ?This morning Judge Shore issued a gag order prohibiting all counsel and parties from commenting or expressing opinions on the case. All I am permitted to say is that I disagree.?

The judge in the case has come under fire for his decision barring the defendant?s lawyer from mentioning his client?s First Amendment right to free speech and expression.

?The State?s Vandalism Statute does not mention First Amendment rights,? he explained in his ruling.

In a statement to Huffington Post earlier this week, the San Diego City Attorney?s Office explained why they believe this is not a free speech case:

?This is a graffiti case where the defendant is alleged to have engaged in the conduct on 13 different occasions. The trial judge has already held that, under California law, it is still graffiti even if the material can be removed with water. Most graffiti can be removed. Also, the judge and a different pre-trial judge held that the First Amendment is not a defense to vandalism/graffiti.?

And while the City Attorney?s Office might be prosecuting the case, the mayor of San Diego has come out in support of the defendant.

?This young man is being persecuted for thirteen counts of vandalism stemming from an expression of political protest that involved washable children?s chalk on a City sidewalk,? read a statement released earlier this week by Mayor Bob Filner. ?It is alleged that he has no previous criminal record. If these assertions are correct, I believe this is a misuse and waste of taxpayer money. It could also be characterized as an abuse of power that infringes on First Amendment particularly when it is arbitrarily applied to some, but not all, similar speech.?

In discussing the gag order yesterday, the judge called the mayor?s statement ?irresponsible? and said that Filner had no place voicing his personal opinion about court trials.

Meanwhile, some readers have pointed out to us the likelihood that the defendant in the chalk-scribbling case is probably the same Jeff from San Diego who claimed in 2011 that he?d been threatened by a BofA employee while standing outside a bank branch to provide passersby with information about switching to a credit union.

India, China seek 'rational solution' at end of border talks

India and China decided to seek a fair and rational solution to their border dispute on Saturday as they focused on the proposed border defence cooperation agreement to avert incursions like the one witnessed in Leh region last month. This emerged at the end of the two-day 16th round of border talks between the Special Representatives of the two countries --National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Yang Jeichi -- in Beinjing.

The talks, which were held against the backdrop of the recent incursion of Chinese troops near Ladakh, covered a host of issues bedevilling the relations between the two countries. They were held in a productive, constructive and forward-looking atmosphere, a brief statement put out by the Indian embassy in Beijing after the talks said.

Menon and Yang also discussed the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the India-China border areas including possible additional confidence building measures, ways and means of strengthening existing mechanisms for consultation and coordination on border affairs and methodology to enhance the efficiency of communications between the two sides, the statement said.

A Chinese statement said border disputes with India will be resolved through peaceful negotiations, with agreement to seek a fair and rational solution acceptable to both sides. "The two sides agree to give full play to the (existing) mechanisms on border-related issues and maintain peace and tranquility in border areas before issues are resolved," a Chinese foreign ministry statement said.

During the "constructive and fruitful" talks, Yang and Menon also exchanged views on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern in a candid and in-depth way. The two officials also reviewed the status of bilateral relations in the wake of the recent landmark visit to India of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. They discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest, it said.

The two sides believe that the development of the China-India relationship is in the interests of the two nations, the region and the world at large, it said. They also pledged to sustain high-level interactions, enhance mutual trust, boost practical cooperation, step up cultural and people-to-people exchanges and further advance bilateral ties, it said.

The talks reportedly focussed on the draft of the border defence cooperation agreement, on which both sides already exchanged views. The pact is aimed at creating a new architecture of confidence building measures along the Line of Actual Control, especially in the back drop of the Depsang Valley incident in April this year in which a batch of Chinese troops pitched tents about 19 km inside the Indian side.

The border agreement, in which India would like to incorporate provisions to avert incidents like the Depsang face off, was expected to take shape before the visit of Defence Minister A K Antony to India scheduled for July 4 to 7.

In his briefing to the media after the first round of talks on Friday, Menon said BDCA's aim is to set up mechanisms, which will provide for consultations for communication so that the two sides can improve management of border. About the Depsang incident he said, "We were able to successfully handle that, to deal with that and restored status quo as it had been before tents were pitched."

The successful handling of that led to the visit of Li Keqiang?s high profile visit to India.

Stating that the border agreement would be discussed further during the visit of Antony, Menon said, "Slowly we are strengthening this edifice of both the dialogue mechanisms and the edifice of consultations and the mechanisms we have in place."??

On the border dispute resolution, Menon had said right at beginning the special representatives agreed on a three-stage process. Principles part was done by 2005. "We have been discussing framework in various ways, this is most complex" as it will actually translate into the settlement, he had said.

The SRs who were originally given the task of boundary settlement also now deal with maintaining peace and tranquility along the LAC. Over time they started discussing the political relationship in particular on various issues.

In his opening remarks at the talks on Saturday, Yang said the relations are guided by the ?extraordinary political wisdom? of Indian and Chinese leaders. "This is one of the most noticeable developments in the international landscape in the 21st century and also there is a good foundation for cooperation between emerging economies," he said.

In his remarks, Menon said thanks to decisions of the leaders of the two countries India-China relations have been on a path of steady growth and development, and today have acquired a significance that is not only bilateral, but also regional and global. "There is no question that our discussions have been productive, constructive and forward-looking and I am looking forward to continuing those discussions today on the various issues," he said.

"I would like to say that India and China are re-emerging countries, not just emerging countries. But it is true that the changes, that through the efforts of our peoples and our leadership we have made in the last few decades, these are truly historic changes," he said.

Menon was assisted in the talks by the Indian Ambassador to China S.Jaishankar and Joint Secretary, East Asia of the External Affairs Ministry, Gutam Bambawale.

On Friday, Menon called on Premier Li and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. In his talks with Menon, Li said? "China and India, as strategic partners and friends, have enough wisdom to resolve their differences. Both sides should view the border issue from an overall and strategic perspective."

Li called on the two sides to strengthen communication in a bid to narrow their differences on the border issue and work together to safeguard peace and stability in the border area. "I hope the representatives of the two sides could coordinate closely and contribute more effective work to promote new progress in the negotiations," state-run Xinhua quoted Li as saying.

He also called the China-India relationship as one of the most important and vigorous bilateral relationships in the world and noting that the two nations are now facing significant opportunities for developing ties. "China and India both need a peaceful and stable environment for national development," Li said, stressing that bilateral cooperation should be pushed forward, not simply maintained.

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says he?s not worried about Houston Sen. Dan Patrick?s challenge to his re-election

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst speaks to the Dallas Regional Chamber at the The Fairmont Dallas Hotel, in Dallas, TX. (Lara Solt/The Dallas Morning News)

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said Saturday he wasn?t worried about Sen. Dan Patrick challenge to his re-election bid.

?Are you kidding? No. I?m delighted,? he said. ?We have a great record. There are so many things I want to do in the future. We want to continue to improve this state. I?m the only traditional businessperson elected statewide.?

Patrick, R-Houston, joins Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples in the GOP primary against Dewhurst.

In 2012 the heavily favored Dewhurst lost in the Republican Senate primary to Ted Cruz, a largely unknown candidate who built momentum after the election season was delayed by fights over redistricting.

Dewhurst said his record as the state?s No. 2 leader would make the difference in the 2014 campaign.

?I know it?s harder to stay on top than to get on top,? he said. ?I?m going to make sure this state keeps moving forward. I?m going to help keep Texas No. 1.?

On Saturday Dewhurst got endorsements from Kyleen Wright of Texans for Life and Elizabeth Graham of Texas Right to Life.

Renamo says it laments Mozambique economic disruption, seeks talks

By Marina Lopes

MAPUTO (Reuters) - Mozambique opposition party Renamo, suspected of killing two civilians last week in a nascent guerrilla campaign, said on Friday it regretted disruption of the economy and called for more dialogue with the government.

Two decades after the end of a long civil war, Renamo is stepping up pressure on the Frelimo ruling party, sparking concern a return to violence could derail Mozambique's commodity-fuelled economic boom.

Global miner Rio Tinto this week suspended coal shipments from northwest Mozambique after the former guerrilla group threatened to disrupt the Sena railway used to move coal to the Indian Ocean.

"We want to see more investors coming into Mozambique, but the current moment of political tension does not permit this," spokesman Fernando Mazanga told Reuters, adding the party "lamented" the disruption to growth in the former Portuguese colony.

"That is why we want to accelerate the talks with the government."

Last week gunmen killed two people in ambushes on vehicles.

Eleven soldiers and policemen and five civilians have been killed since April in attacks blamed on Renamo, which was founded in the 1970s with the help of apartheid South Africa to counter the Marxist Frelimo.

Although Renamo is not large enough to manage a widespread guerrilla campaign, it is estimated to have 1,000 men under arms and analysts say it could cause enough trouble to upset the foreign mining investment boom.

Renamo also called for increased dialogue and condemned the movement of troops and weapons towards the centre of the country, which it said targeted its leader, Afonso Dhlakama, who has operated from his base in the remote Gorongosa Mountains since November.

Renamo has previously backed out of talks. In April it rejected the government's offer for talks, saying the proposed location - a luxury hotel in the capital - was "not dignified enough for the importance of the meeting".

The Ministry of Defence could not confirm an increase in troops or weapons in the central part of the country.

"The military is always in motion. There is no space that can be free from the authority of the government," Benjamin Marco, a spokesman for the ministry, told Reuters.

Exploding Bullets Frozen In Plexiglass Are Hauntingly Beautiful

Just because a piece of glass might claim to be "bulletproof" doesn't necessarily mean that it's actually, well, bulletproof. But if your bullet-resistant glass is sturdy enough, that speeding bullet will usually just end up lodged in layers of polycarbonate. That's what intrigues photographer Deborah Bay.

Math targets cities' essence

New formula relates city size to infrastructure, productivity

By Rachel Ehrenberg

Though strikingly different in culture and layout, cities like London and Beijing share many properties with regard to infrastructure, social interactions and productivity.

The notion that cities are all alike borders on blasphemy. Residents of the world?s great metropolises, from New York to London to Tokyo, speak of their homes as of a first love or old friend. But decades of analyses hint that cities, mathematically speaking, might actually all be the same. Now for the first time, those observations have been tidily and elegantly drawn together into a formula that describes what a city is.

That new work is part of a growing field dedicated to the science of cities. The effort is a timely one: Roughly 75 percent of people in the developed world now live in urban environments. While much of the research is in its early days, eventually it may serve as a powerful, widely used tool for urban planners and policymakers.

The mathematical work is rooted in and reinforces the view ?that cities grow from the bottom up,? says Michael Batty, who trained as an architect, planner and geographer and went on to found the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London. ?The diversity of life [in cities] offers greater opportunities for mixing ideas.?

That diversity, which includes dismal poverty, squalid slums and crime juxtaposed with prosperous businesses, majestic parks and great art institutions, was much decried in the 19th century. In 1883, for example, textile designer and artist William Morris lamented England?s cities as ?mere masses of sordidness, filth, and squalor, embroidered with patches of pompous and vulgar hideousness, no less revolting to the eye and the mind?.?

Discomfort with the notion that cities grew from the bottom up went along with disdain for disorder and chaos, framing cities as a problem to be solved. This view prevailed into the 20th century and influenced postwar urban renewal projects across the United States. The resulting redevelopment forever changed parts of cities such as Pittsburgh and Boston, with mixed results.

In the last several decades, however, the view of cities as disordered systems has begun to change, Batty says. Patterns have emerged within the chaos. Researchers in economics, physics, complexity theory and statistical mechanics have observed that certain features of cities consistently vary with population size.

But the relationships aren?t direct and linear. As a city grows, some features, such as land area, grow more slowly with respect to population. This ?sublinear? relationship also holds for some aspects of physical infrastructure, such as the length of pipes and roads: As population grows, proportionately less infra?structure is required to support each additional person.

For other characteristics, the reverse is true: Some measures grow faster with respect to the population. This ?superlinear? scaling has been observed for a number of socioeconomic factors in cities around the world. Produced wealth, whether measured as income, wages or gross domestic product, increases at a rate greater than the population. So does crime. Markers of innovation, including the number of patents produced and number of jobs in creative fields like the arts and sciences, also increase superlinearly.

While there?s some quibbling about the exact mathematical values, the relationships among city characteristics generally hold, says physicist and complex systems scientist Lu?s Bettencourt of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico.

Bettencourt, with other researchers at the Santa Fe Institute and colleagues elsewhere, has been examining these relationships for more than a decade. Now Bettencourt has created a series of equations, published in the June 21 Science, that pull the relationships together into a mathematical theory of cities.

Bettencourt?s math stands on four basic assumptions: First, cities mix varied people together, allowing them to reach each other. Next, cities are networks that grow gradually and incrementally, connecting people. Third, human effort isn?t limitless and stays the same regardless of urban size. And finally, measures of the socioeconomic output of a city ? things like the number of patents awarded or crime rate ? are proportional to the number of social interactions.

Bettencourt?s theory captures the interplay between a city?s population, its area, the properties of its infrastructure and its social connectivity. By mathematically describing the tension between a city?s number of social interactions, their outcome (innovation, for example, or crime), and the transportation and energy costs of enabling those interactions, Bettencourt arrives at a parameter that he calls G*. The closer a city?s value is to G* the more effective it is at producing positive interactions and all the benefits that flow from them.

?In a nutshell, the city is the best way of creating a vast, open-ended social network that minimizes the cost of moving things in and around an environment,? Bettencourt says. ?When people brush up against each other, that?s when the magic of the city happens ? the social reactor begins to work.?

That conclusion isn?t so surprising, Batty says. Consider how a concentration of creative genius and technological know-how has made Silicon Valley into one of the world?s foremost engines of wealth. Bettencourt?s theory ?basically unpacks the equations and then puts it all together and leads us to what we observe in a clean and elegant way,? Batty says.

In many respects, the theory formalizes what writer and activist Jane Jacobs articulated in her 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Earlier scholars? emphasis on aesthetics and form missed what makes cities so great, she argued. Cities are a way of sustaining an enormous number of social interactions through time, she wrote, ?a most intricate and close-grained diversity of uses that give each other constant mutual support, both economically and socially.?

What urban planners and policymakers will take from Bettencourt?s new theory remains to be seen. The research suggests that enabling mixing of people and fostering the creation and spread of ideas is never a bad idea. It also suggests that city planning should not involve grand, top-down projects, but perhaps well-considered smaller ones.

?We need to identify the minimal interventions that can lead to the greatest gains,? Batty says. ?Complexity theory teaches us that things are a good deal more complex than we think, and when we interfere, it can be at our peril.?

Back Story | Ahead of her time

Writer and activist Jane Jacobs did not pull punches. ?This book is an attack on current city planning and rebuilding,? begins the introduction to her 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. The book was a reaction to the postwar urban renewal projects of her time. But it was also prescient, foreshadowing a view of cities as complex systems ? a view that researchers increasingly embrace today. ?The kind of problem which cities pose,? Jacobs wrote, is ?a problem in handling organized complexity.? That perspective is enriched and expanded upon in work by complex systems scientist Lu?s Bettencourt of the Santa Fe Institute. For years, Bettencourt says, discussions of cities have emphasized form over function. Bettencourt?s work, he says, ?is an attempt to shift perspective from what a city looks like to what a city is. Cities are social reactors.?

In addition to her writing, Jane Jacobs, who died in 2006, was known for her protest of the construction of the Lower Manhattan Expressway (map shows proposed development), which would have bisected Soho and nearby neighborhoods.

Prosecutors say NFL star Aaron Hernandez 'orchestrated execution,' concealed evidence

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is charged in a Massachusetts court with murder and several counts of unlawful possession of firearms.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez drove his friend to a remote spot in an industrial park in the dead of night and ? still fuming from a fight at a nightclub three nights earlier ? "orchestrated his execution," prosecutors alleged in a Massachusetts court Wednesday.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and five firearms charges, including possessing a large-capacity firearm, more than a week after the body of Odin Lloyd, 27, was found near his Massachusetts home. A judge ordered him held without bail.

Hernandez "drove the victim to the remote spot, and he then orchestrated his execution. That's what it was," First Assistant District Attorney William McCauley said in Attleboro District Court.

"As (Lloyd) tried to turn, he was shot in the back, and the defendant and his confederates stood over him and delivered the two fatal shots," McCauley said, adding: "He orchestrated the crime from the beginning and took steps to conceal and destroy evidence."

Wearing a white V-neck shirt, red sports shorts and handcuffs, Hernandez showed no emotion as prosecutors laid out a bruising account of what allegedly happened the night Lloyd, a semi-professional football player,?was killed, citing what they say is surveillance camera footage, text messages and witnesses who were working the overnight shift who heard gunshots as evidence. Hernandez?wiped tears from his face at the very end of the arraignment.

Lloyd's bullet-punctured body was found by a jogger June 17 in an industrial park a mile from Hernandez's North Attleborough home. The death was ruled a homicide.

Prosecutors said that the killing was prompted by a fight between the two friends during a trip June 14 to a Boston nightclub. Three days later, Hernandez and two friends allegedly picked Lloyd up at his house at 2:30 a.m. Surveillance footage from Hernandez's house shows him leaving earlier in the night with a weapon, prosecutors said.

After getting into the car, Lloyd allegedly texted a family member, asking, "Did you see who I am with," prosecutors said. He then texted that it was Hernandez and followed it up with "Just so you know" in another text message, the prosecutors alleged during the arraignment.

Later that morning, between 3:23 a.m. and 3:27 a.m., employees who were working the overnight shift at the industrial park where Lloyd's body would later be found reported hearing gunshots, authorities said. It's not clear who investigators believe fired the shots.

"It is at bottom a circumstantial case. It is not a strong case," Michael Fee, Hernandez's attorney, said in court.

Prosecutors allege that security videos from Hernandez's house show him with firearms after Lloyd was murdered and show a Nissan Altima ? the same type of car Hernandez had rented ? going to and coming from the site where Lloyd's body would be found. He was seen exiting the vehicle at 3:29 a.m. with a gun at his home on the surveillance footage, prosecutors claim, shortly after authorities say Lloyd was killed.

Hernandez, 23, was placed in handcuffs and put in a police cruiser just before 9 a.m. Wednesday by Massachusetts State Police and North Attleborough police. Authorities have searched his home, on the Rhode Island line not far from the Patriots' stadium, several times over the past week.

Less than two hours after the arrest, the Patriots announced they were releasing Hernandez.

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken out of his home in handcuffs more than a week after a body was found near his Massachusetts home.

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do," a statement from the team read.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez in 2010. Last summer, the team gave Hernandez a five-year contractworth $40 million, including a signing bonus of $12.5 million.

The investigation also cost Hernandez his endorsement contract with CytoSport, which makes Muscle Milk and other supplements for athletes, last week.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Further information about the investigation is likely to be scarce.?Attleboro District Court Magistrate Mark Sturdy sealed the case records and has imposed a gag order on prosecutors and defense attorneys alike.

Separately, Hernandez is also embroiled in a civil lawsuit by a Connecticut man, Alexander Bradley, who alleges Hernandez that?shot him in the eye after the two left a Miami strip club in February.

According to a Palm Beach County police report, the case was abandoned because Bradley refused to cooperate with authorities.

Hernandez lives with his fianc?e and their infant, according to Fee.

'Sopranos' star James Gandolfini dies at 51

Celebs

Actor James Gandolfini, who rose to fame as mob boss Tony Soprano on the hit HBO drama "The Sopranos," died Wednesday of a possible heart attack while visiting Rome. He was 51.

Antonio D'amore, director of the Italian capital's Hotel Boscolo, said the actor a collapsed around 10 p.m. local time (4 p.m. ET).

Gandolfini's son Michael was with him in the hotel room and called for help, according to D'amore. Staff rushed to the room and found him on the bathroom's floor. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.

"We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family," HBO said in a statement. "He was a special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us."

Gandolfini had appeared in numerous films before landing the role of Soprano, but it was the panic attack-stricken mob boss who would forever define him. He won critical acclaim, three Emmy Awards and three Screen Actors Guild awards for the role, which he played from 1999-2007 on the groundbreaking show.

?He was a genius," said "Sopranos" creator David Chase. "Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, 'You don't get it. You're like Mozart.' There would be silence at the other end of the phone. For (wife) Deborah and (son) Michael and (baby daughter) Liliana this is crushing. And it's bad for the rest of the world. He wasn't easy sometimes. But he was my partner, he was my brother in ways I can't explain and never will be able to explain.?

The actor's managers also released a statement. "It is with immense sorrow that we report our client James Gandolfini passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy," it read. "Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving."

Although a New Jersey native, Gandolfini didn't expect to land the role of the head of the New Jersey crime family. "I thought that they would hire some good-looking guy, not George Clooney but some Italian George Clooney, and that would be that," he told Vanity Fair in 2012.

But instead, it was Gandolfini who got the nod, and he made viewers care about a mob boss who could order the murder of a family member one minute and turn around and tenderly feed the ducks that swam in his estate's swimming pool the next.

"I think you cared about Tony because David was smart enough to write the Greek chorus, through (Soprano's psychiatrist) Dr. Melfi," Gandolfini said. "So you sat there and you got to see his motives, what he was thinking, what he was trying to do, what he was trying to fix, what he was trying to become. And then you saw it didn?t really work out the way he wanted it to."

Actress Lorraine Bracco, who played Melfi, said in a statement, "We lost a giant today. I am utterly heartbroken."

Six years ago this month, "The Sopranos" came to an end with a mystifying finale where Tony and family sit in a diner. As an unseen person enters, Tony looks up, and the screen goes blank, forever ending the show. Gandolfini too admitted to a confused reaction to the long-awaited wrapup episode.

"When I first saw the ending, I said, ?What the (expletive)?? he told Vanity Fair. "I mean, after all I went through, all this death, and then it?s over like that? But after I had a day to sleep, I just sat there and said, 'That?s perfect.'"

Members of the band Journey, whose 1981 hit "Don't Stop Believin'" was playing in that final scene, mourned Gandolfini's loss Wednesday. "It's truly an honor to have been able to share one of the greatest moments ever in TV history with James Gandolfini," the band said in a statement. "He was an amazing actor -- taken way too young -- and he'll be missed. Our condolences go out to his family."

Fans and fellow actors quickly took to social media to mourn his death.

"I am heartbroken about James Gandolfini," wrote actress Rose McGowan, tweeting a photo of herself with Gandolfini. "He was a gentle giant and great man." The two were part of a group of actors who traveled to Afghanistan in 2010 to support American troops there.

Gandolfini also went on a USO tour to Kuwait and Iraq in 2004, and found himself unable to forget the soldiers and Marines he met there. The result was his 2008 HBO documentary, "Alive Day Memories," in which he spoke with 10 men and women who survived the war. The program was nominated for an Emmy Award for outstanding nonfiction special, and NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams called it a "powerful and nonpolitical hour of television."

It wasn't Gandolfini's only work to support the military. He also produced the 2010 HBO documentary "Wartorn: 1861-2010," which examined combat and post-traumatic stress, from the Civil War to modern day.

And Gandolfini was continuing to work busily in both film and television. Just last month, HBO ordered seven episodes of his new project, "Criminal Justice," according to The Hollywood Reporter. His most recent movie role was that of a clueless billionaire casino owner in Steve Carell's "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," which opened in March, and he played a character based on former CIA director Leon Panetta in 2012's "Zero Dark Thirty."

In a 2009 appearance on "Inside the Actors Studio," host James Lipton asked Gandolfini, "if heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?"

Gandolfini thought for a moment, and as a giant smile slowly broke across his face, cracked, "Take over for a while, I'll be right back!"

NBC News' Claudio Lavanga contributed to this report.

Animal study shows promising path to prevent epilepsy

June 20, 2013 ? Duke Medicine researchers have identified a receptor in the nervous system that may be key to preventing epilepsy following a prolonged period of seizures.

Their findings from studies in mice, published online in the journal Neuron on June 20, 2013, provide a molecular target for developing drugs to prevent the onset of epilepsy, not just manage the disease's symptoms.

"Unfortunately, there are no preventive therapies for any common disorder of the human nervous system -- Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, schizophrenia, epilepsy -- with the exception of blood pressure-lowering drugs to reduce the likelihood of stroke," said study author James O. McNamara, M.D., professor of neurobiology at Duke Medicine.

Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder marked by recurring seizures. Temporal lobe epilepsy -- where seizures occur in the region of the brain where memories are stored and language, emotions and senses are processed -- is the most common form, and can be devastating. Because afflicted individuals have seizures that impair their awareness and may have associated behavioral problems, they may have difficulty with everyday activities, including holding a job or obtaining a driver's license.

Conventional therapies to treat epilepsy address the disease's symptoms by trying to reduce the likelihood of having a seizure. However, many people with temporal lobe epilepsy still have seizures despite taking these drugs.

"This study opens a promising new avenue of research into treatments that may prevent the development of epilepsy," said Vicky Whittemore, PhD, a program director at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, who oversees the grants that funded this study.

Retrospective studies of people with severe temporal lobe epilepsy reveal that many of them initially have an episode of prolonged seizures, known as status epilepticus. Status epilepticus is often followed by a period of seizure-free recovery before people start to experience recurring temporal lobe seizures.

In animal studies, inducing status epilepticus in an otherwise healthy animal can cause them to become epileptic. The prolonged seizures in status epilepticus are therefore thought to cause or importantly contribute to the development of epilepsy in humans.

"An important goal of this field has been to identify the molecular mechanism by which status epilepticus transforms a brain from normal to epileptic," said McNamara. "Understanding that mechanism in molecular terms would provide a target with which one could intervene pharmacologically, perhaps to prevent an individual from becoming epileptic."

Earlier research in epilepsy flagged a receptor in the nervous system called TrkB as a key player in transforming the brain from normal to epileptic. In the current study, McNamara and his colleagues sought to confirm if TrkB was important for status epilepticus-induced epilepsy.

Using an approach combining chemistry and genetic analyses, the researchers studied normal and genetically altered mice. The genetically altered mice were unique in that a drug, 1NMPP1, inhibited TrkB in their brains. If the drug stopped the genetically altered mice from becoming epileptic, this genetic approach would prove that inhibiting TrkB prevents the onset of epilepsy.

When the researchers caused status epilepticus in the animals, both the normal and genetically modified mice developed epilepsy. However, treatment with 1NMPP1 after the prolonged period of seizures prevented epilepsy in the genetically altered but not the normal mice.

"This demonstrated that it is possible to intervene following status epilepticus and prevent the animal from becoming epileptic," McNamara said.

Importantly, the researchers only administered treatment with 1NMPP1 for two weeks, which was sufficient to prevent epilepsy from developing in the mice when tested many weeks later. The results suggest that a preventive therapy may only need to be given for a limited period of time following the initial bout of prolonged seizures, not an individual's entire life, which could prevent unnecessary side effects that come with long-term use of drugs.

In future studies, the researchers hope to determine the exact time window in which TrkB signaling needs to be repressed to prevent the onset of epilepsy. Long term, this research provides a molecular target for developing the first drugs to prevent epilepsy.

"This study provides a strong rationale for the development of selective inhibitors of TrkB signaling," said McNamara.

In addition to McNamara, study authors include Gumei Liu, Bin Gu, Xiao-Ping He, Rasesh B. Joshi, Harold D. Wackerle, Ramona Marie Rodriguiz and William C. Wetsel. The study was supported by funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NS56217 and NS060728).

Spike TV?s ?Fight Master? debuts Wednesday

Spike TV will debut its Bellator reality show on Wednesday night, after the fight card headlined by "King Mo" Lawal's bout with Seth Petruzelli. In "Fight Master," fighters are competing for $100,000 and a spot in Bellator's next tourney. If you think that sounds like "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC's reality show that launched on Spike before heading to FX, the similarities end there.

This show has a feel to it more like NBC's hit singing show, "The Voice." Bellator champ Joe Warren, UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, UFC pioneer Frank Shamrock and trainer extraordinaire Greg Jackson will all serve as coaches. After fighting in preliminary fights, the fighters and coaches go through a process that reminds me of sorority rush. Fighters and coaches pick each other, and the camp process starts after the camps are picked.

Will you tune in? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

Fed sees lower US unemployment, more growth

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Reserve sketched a slightly brighter picture of the U.S. economy this year and next, a sign it is moving closer to slowing its bond-buying program.

The Fed now predicts unemployment will fall to 7.2 percent or 7.3 percent at the end of 2013 from 7.6 percent now. It thinks the rate will be between 6.5 percent and 6.8 percent by the end of 2014, better than its projection from March of 6.7 percent to 7 percent.

The 6.5 percent level is significant because the Fed has said it plans to keep the short-term interest rate it controls near zero at least until unemployment falls that low.

Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said Wednesday's forecasts suggest that most Fed officials now expect that threshold to be reached by early 2015. In March, the Fed's forecasts indicated it wouldn't be reached until the second half of 2015.

The projections also showed that 14 of the 19 members of the Fed's policymaking committee indicated the Fed shouldn't begin raising rates until 2015. Three chose 2014, one this year and one 2016.

Fed officials also expect growth to pick up next year to between 3 percent and 3.5 percent, up from their previous projection of 2.9 percent to 3.4 percent. Fed policymakers were slightly less optimistic about this year. Growth will be no more than 2.6 percent, they said, down from their prediction, in March, of 2.8 percent.

The Fed also expects inflation to dip even further below its 2 percent target. Inflation will be just 0.8 percent to 1.2 percent by the end of this year, they predicted, though it will rise in 2014 and 2015.

Fed policymakers downplayed the low inflation figures in the statement they issued Wednesday, saying they were likely temporary.

Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said during a press conference that the Fed could start scaling back its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases later this year if the economy continues to improve. The reductions would occur in "measured steps" and the purchases could end by the middle of next year, he said. By then, Bernanke said he thought unemployment would be around 7 percent.

Michael B. Fishbein: Startup Advice from David S. Kidder

David S. Kidder is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor. Currently, he's the co-founder and CEO of Bionic, an enterprise innovation platform. Prior to Bionic, David served as the co-founder and CEO of Clickable (acquired by Syncapse). Prior to Clickable, Kidder co-founded SmartRay Network (acquired by LifeMinders), and Net-X (acquired by Target Vision). In January 2013, he published The Startup Playbook, which leverages his insider access to reveal the experiences and advice of over 40 of the world's leading entrepreneurs.

When I interviewed David last week, he shared some amazing advice on starting a company, hiring, and more. I've summarized my key takeaways from our conversation below.

Starting a Company

  • When starting a company, trust your innate gifts. Mold the company around these gifts so you're working towards something that's at your highest level of interest and purpose.
  • Entrepreneurship is a career, not an outcome. It takes a long time to become good at it.
  • In The Startup Playbook, David asked the entrepreneurs what percentage of their economic outcome they attribute to good fortune, timing, or simply luck - across the board, all answered that 70% of their success was due to luck. Luck is the intersection of hard work and good fortune. An incredible amount of things need to go right (or not go wrong) at exactly the right time for you to succeed.
  • Being a successful entrepreneur is a hero's journey. The uncertainty and possibility leads to incredible learning and growth for you as a person -- it's about who you are capable of becoming, not who you are. The fact that there is no safety net at all forces maturity on you.

Silicon Alley vs. Silicon Valley

  • Silicon Valley is 20 years ahead of New York City's Silicon Alley in terms of network, capital, acquisitions, etc. This is because it takes a long time for communities to evolve. You need institutions, large acquiring companies, and a strong network of talent. New York has been steadily improving in these areas; there are now significant investment cohorts coming through NYC.
  • However, Silicon Valley also has a downside: it's an echo chamber. Everyone has similar experiences and influences, which can lead to groupthink. New York City has more cultural diversity and a more open community than Silicon Valley, which is more insular.
  • In the Valley, larger established companies will acquire startups just to gain competitive technical advances, or because the smaller company's technology or intellectual property is appealing. Business in New York City is much more finance-driven.

Productivity

  • If you need sleep, you shouldn't start a company. You have to be able to work more hours and juggle more things than the average individual. This requires exceptional productivity skills.
  • Delegating is key. Quit areas of weakness and commitments that don't drive growth. Don't do something just because you can do it well; go with what's going to add the most value to your product or service.

Enterprise Sales

  • Relationships are key when selling into the Enterprise marketplace. If you have a relationship with a C-level executive, it can take days for a deal to happen. But if you're going in at the VP level, it can take a year or more. Selling effectively requires more than just a great product. You need great reputational signaling and great relationships.

Corporate Innovation

  • Not for a lack of desire or talent, large companies haven't been able to grow at a startup's pace. They've been in the efficiency game too long, acting as administrators of what they have instead of creators of something new. They're accustomed to seeking growth through mergers and acquisitions, as opposed to new ventures.
  • Startups have a high failure rate, and that's generally not acceptable in the world of enterprise. But in today's rapidly changing economy, more big businesses are finding that they need to foster a culture similar to that of a startup.

Hiring

  • Be extremely careful about selecting and curating your team. Making a mistake in this area is one of the only things that can be fatal, as one wrong hire in the beginning can screw up an entire company.

David's favorite interview questions for potential hires:

1. "Tell me something I don't know about my business." By their answers, you can tell if people have done their homework or not.
2. "On a scale from 1 - 10, how fortunate are you and why?" With this question, you can get a better picture of the individual by learning about his or her whole life. You can also get answers to questions that you're not legally allowed to ask.
3. "What did people most misunderstand about you at your last job?" While a candidate will often tell you why their former teammates didn't like them, the way they explain themselves can reveal much about how they would fit into your team, and the company's overall culture.
