My Dog Daughter and Me

This Mother?s Day I?ll no doubt receive a nice card and a gift. I?ve come to expect this in the past nine years. I don?t have any children. I have a dog. I never even heard the term?Dog Mom? until I adopted my dog Sadie and suddenly all my friends were ?Dog Moms?.?I?ll never forget the first time I used the term for myself. I?d just gotten the news that my?recently adopted puppy was in danger?after being exposed to the Parvo Virus. I ran the? two blocks?home?from my office in high heels, dashed inside, down the stairs, grabbed her out of the crate saying??MOM is home.?

From that day, I?ve always considered that?my most important role in life. I love being Sadie?s Mom. I am surrounded by other Dog Moms that share things about dogs the same way Mom?s of human kids do. Twenty years ago, you?d never hear the term Dog Mom, but things have certainly changed. Dog products are marketed to ?Pet Parents? not dog owners. Many cities in the US have changed the term ?dog owner? to ?dog guardian? in an effort to show the relationship between people and their pets.

I take care of Sadie just like she were a child. I cook for her, brush her teeth, take charge of her medical care. I spend time with her, get her toys and do everything I can to make sure she has a good life. I take her to daycare and like other Mothers, my work days revolve around those drop off and pickup hours. I hold her close and breathe into her hair and rejoice in her being.?She is my Dog Daughter.

So how about all you Dog Mom?s out there? How will you include your dog in your special day? Do you expect to receive a card?or gift? (This of course depends on who your dog can get to take them shopping!) Sadie is lucky that I was fortunate to find a kind and?thoughtful man for my partner who is always ready to do her shopping. Sometimes, he needs a little nudging, but always makes sure her needs are met.??Will you prepare a special meal to share with you dog to show how happy you are to her Mom? I?d love to hear from other Dog Moms?do you love being a ?Dog Mom??

Sunday evening when our special day is over, Sadie and will be curled up on the sofa contemplating the return of the work week. I never thought I?d be a good mother and never had a desire to have any children. Sadie brought out the best in me and awakened qualities I didn?t know I possessed.
